If I recall, the derby cover use #27 Torx. It is sort of a bastard size. Most Torx sets don't have #27 and jump right to a #30. First time I changed my primary oil I stripped out the bolt head, I mean really bad. I used a hand impact driver with a #30 to get it out. That impact driver has gotten me out of more jams then I can remember.
Yep impact driver is the way to go on those damn things! I don't even attempt to remove them without one after my first experience removeing those bolts. I also use it to torque them down as well.

In reference to GMAN, what are the specifications for the chrome, Allen-head bolts that can be used to replace the Torx screws that hold the derby cover? (ie. length, thread pitch & type).

Thanks,
Richard

I had some clutch problems on the road and I ended up stripping out one of those bastards in a parking lot. I had to drill it out once I got towed home. I put hex bolts in mine, but then when I chaged to a different cover I used the included star bolts...I'm probably going to go back to the hex bolts though.

Fortunately (apparently), I didn't have any
trouble with mine. No loctite and I don't use
it on the reinstall. Torque to specs and should
be okay. Use good tools, Snap-on preferred
but have some Craftsmen that are okay too.

I believe the stock bolt dimensions are 1/4 20 x 5/8...someone else wanna confirm this?

I think you're probably right on the size. I just took one of the old torx bolts and washer down the Ace Hardware, and matched them up with some chrome allen head bolts and washers.

Surprised your Ace Hardware has them in chrome...my Ace carries nothing in chrome, only stainless steel. Ended up buying them on Ebay for $1.85/each.

Today I went to Autozone to get a star socket set for replacing my derby cover. I bought a Great Neck 9-piece set & as I attempted to remove the first bolt I snapped the tip of the socket bit right off inside the bolt. Luckily my buddy was able to remove what was left of the bit head inside the bolt without damaging anything else, but couldn't believe it snapped off that easily? Also surprised as to just how little of the amount of bit the derby cover bolts accept (barely any of the bit head at all!)? This is a new bike & I'm pretty sure this derby cover has never been removed before i.e.,...someone else locktite'n the hell out of it? I'm going to return the socket set tomorrow for another one; probabaly different brand too!...this ever happen to anyone else?

Yeah, popped the end off a #27 craftsman torx.

Like some others here, once I got the sumbitches out, I replaced them with allen button heads.
