Hey guys, I agree that a lot, if not most, rider solo accidents are caused by the poor decisions of the operator, drinking, riding late at night, excessive speed for conditions, ect. However, all the statistics I've ever seen state that most motorcycle accidents are caused by another motor vehicle and most of those involvecars making left turns in front of the bike. Sorry I can't give you better numbers. I'll have to go look them up but I think it's like 3/4 and 2/3. I think the ABATE site might have them. My point is this is a two fold strategy. One, ride smart. Use good judgement in your personal riding behavior. Two, anticipate. Train yourself to recognize potential hazzards before they happen. It's a helluvalot easier to stay out of bad situations than to deal with them as they happen or to deal with the aftermath.

Alot of great advise by all..... If you can, if you didn't, take the Harley Riders Edge course!!! The BEST THING I EVER DID, !!!
It was well worth the $250.00, I ride with convidence! I ride Smarter! I ride because I love It!! I ride defensive!!
**If you mount your bike in-
"Fear can also be a negative"- that it may cause to not be agressive when needed and cause problems or misjudgement!! Clear you Head...

**Antisipate everyones next move,,,,Sorry to saypeople are rude, and don't give a sh_T about you! If you do something stupid,,, well ?? If they do something stupid ?? its still your fault...
**I invested alot of money into my bike(my alot)..I am one with my bike (respect)... I think about it everyday I ride......Im not going down on someone elses terms. Period. If I can't keep up with friends or other riders, see yal when I get there!!!

**SPEED, DRINKING, DRUGS, WHATEVER... DON"T MAKE YOU A REAL BIKER!! "RIDE YOUR RIDE"- AND TOMORROW YOU WILL RIDE A BETTER BIKER!! FEAR NOT!!!!

One more word of advice.... never ride when you are upset or in a bad mood. like if i have had a very rotten day.no ride. fight with girlfriend or wife..no ride.. takes 100% focus. not 99% ... 99% will get you in trouble ...

I don't really worry about it. It is the highest risk thing I do but don't sweat it. I know I am a safe rider so I know I will be okay. I do some serious white water kayaking, snowboarding and mountian biking. Fear is when my body and mind are at thier best, sounds gay but its very true.

I read all the stories and I watch them in youtube. A friend of mine says I am sick but I like to see the results of stupid things. I don't screw around very much and when I do its in the day time on a road I am very familier with.

It's not for everyone, I have a bunch of friends that don't ride because they are afraid they will get killed, I call them pussies.

Ride on, just watch out for them cagers

I dont speed, and I gave up alcohol about 6 months ago, so I should be in good shape.
Don't think that because you don't speed or drink when riding that you're home free. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Blaming the other guy won't help much after something happens. Read these posts that you don't like but learn from them, don't let them scare you. Hard to say, but you're better off learning from someone elses mistake than your own. Better yet, go out and take whatever rider courses that are available near you (even an offroad course). Go on Amazon and buy "Proficient Motorcycling", "Motorcycling Excellence" and "Ride Hard Ride Safe" and read them cover to cover. It will be money better spent than any chrome dip stick cover or leather tail pipe tassel that you'll find. Ride safe and enjoy!

As a volunteer firefighter on the Colorado Front Range, we have many more incidents with road bicyclist than motorcycles. Even with the extremely heavy motorcycle traffic in our area, 95% of motorcycle incidents are attributed to drunkin stupidity or crotch rockets pushing the envelope too far. Very seldom do we have issues with your basic sober Harley cruiser.
