Default Transmission question

I have a 2001 Dyna wide line. Yesterday I started having an issue trying to get second gear and as much as I push up on the shifter it’s like there’s nothing there. Then sometimes you can feel like grinding just a little bit. It’s intermittently going into second gear and other times acting like that. level was in between the ad and full mark a little closer to the ad mark than the full but still fine. Fluid smells like gear oil it doesn’t smell burnt. I have a little bit of the silver powder but nothing too excessive. My question and I realize I’m asking somebody to give me an opinion without pulling the panties off, but does this sound more like clutch or gears

Is the 1st to 2nd shift the only time the problem presents? Of course, make sure clutch is adjusted properly; by the book. If no change could be shifter pawl out of adjustment or maybe bent shift fork?

Yes, the only time I have an issue is first the second. Shifting up it’s nothing there. It’s like it’s hit neutral and no matter how you try to push it. It just doesn’t hit second. On occasion, you can feel it grind a little bit I have never adjusted the Clutch on it so I’ll have to get out the manual and give that a try. Outside that everything pulls fine and runs fine.

As djl says, sounds like shifter pawl adjustment. Also check lever bolts and if anything is interfering with shifter movement. Does it shift with the engine off, rocking the bike?

According to The HD parts manual the 2001 wide glide for not have a shift pawl adjustment.. I would suggest that since the FXDWG has forward controls, you make sure that the front arm that connects to the rod that goes to the tranny is not hitting anything. If so make sure the rod is in good shape and the arm on the tranny ain't loose. If someone added a heal shifter. Make sure it's not hitting anything.

Start simple. Make sure all fasteners are tight and nothing is misaligned on the shifting mechanism. Then adjust the clutch. The bike is 24 years old now, so its probably due.
If that doesnt solve the problem then check the shift pawl.
