Default Transmission question

Lately when I shift into 1st gear for the first time after I start the bike it makes a ratcheting sound instead of the solid thunk it used to.

Is that a shifter paw going out?

Will the guts from an '02 Dyna 5 speed fit into my '95 Heritage?

I'm thinkin' your clutch might be just a tad sticky for that first gear selection after starting.

Your tranny oil is still thick from standing but it could be clutch adjustment....02 dyna internals will fit.

Mine has done that for 20 years if:

The idle speed is too fast (not warmed up enough).

The bike has sat too long (clutch dragging-not releasing when lever is first pulled in).

Doesn't seem to have damaged anything yet.

Thank y'all for the info.
I guess I won't worry about it then.

Mine will also do that if the first shift is a "half-hearted" stab at the lever. You need to make that first shift like you mean it.

The reason for the '02 dyna transmission question is because a friend offered me a gear set out of an '02 for $200.

I'm thinking about it just because I like spare parts.
