My '96 FXD has a melted 32404-96 timing cam sensor. It is proving difficult to find. They seem to stop at 1995. What does "vehicle attitude" mean in the parts description for this?
It's a switch inside the sensor that will open when the bike goes down and kills the ignition to shut the motor off.
Your 96 should have Deutsch connectors so the Standard Motor Product MC-SPA3 cam position sensor is the one you need.
So, that part looks to be the one without or before the pre tip-over shut off feature. Is the concensus to just go back to the original simple one, and forgo the tip-over part as unneccesary?
No opinions on whether to ditch the tip-over function and just go with the older simple version? I ordered the simple version. Figure I don't really care about keeping a feature I didn't even know I had. One less thing to fail. Seems like the vacuum petcocks to me, get rid of it.
IIRC, the part number you posted, #32404-96, is the three-wire component with the tip over sensor...
I've never heard of any issues with the tip over sensor in these units (unlike the vacuum petcock you referenced).... So I can't think of a reason why NOT to have one...
If I am just unaware of chronic issues wit that tip over feature, I would welcome some info/correction....
Yes, the one I listed is the tip over version original to my '96. Wouldn't mind having the tip over version as a replacement, just don't see one, except for a Drag Specialties part that is more expensive. Hard to tell though since they all look like they use the same stock photo. The tip over version looks different, it's significantly larger. And they sell them as model specific, when pretty sure they are the same part. At Parts Giant for example, the site tells me the part is for Sportsters, and doesn't fit my bike, On other pages the same part is supposedly for FLH's. So it's misleading.
Anyhow, the non tip over version has been ordered. I'll just live with that.

I myself never once heard of an issue where the altitude switch went bad but who's to say if it wasn't the altitude switch that went and not just hall effect pickup not working..
