1980 FXWG
I have an 80 Wide Glide, and the tail light cover fell off. Bought a new LED light, and as you can see, there's a slight issue. I think I'm just going to put tape over the plate light, as it's tucked under the fender pretty well. Just wondering if there's a raked tail light with the plate light at the bottom?
.
I can't flip the lens assembly over, because the front of the lens is beveled about 45°.
.
There are some numbers on the housing but, I don't see an H-D part number.
EDIT to add:
I guess that is an H-D p/n Found one on Ebay, check the link below.
Most likely your 1980 tail light mounts differently than the 2000 models.

byersmtrco just jogged my memory.
My '01 FXSTS (with a wide glide style fender) has the plate window light in the down orientation. It too has a regular square tail light, just installed upside down. However, I just noticed the online parts finder pic shows it with the plate light window orientation up, just like the '80 FXWG part pic does...
It looks like the parts diagrams just use a plate window up orientation pic for all the regular tail light diagrams, regardless of how they are mounted...
OP, try turning the light/mount upside down....
Your license plate is still lighted at night with red light.
If the law in Wisconsin is too rigid, you could always cut out the bottom of your lens and add a piece of clear plastic at the bottom.
.
My bad, I missed the part that you installed a non-HD light....
Sorry I just confused the issue.

Welcome to the world of modifications... If you choose to "make something fit", then the end result is in your hands.
Hope you find a good resolution for your LED tail light mod.
