So I fitted an external breather with catch can to the Fat Bob, I took it out for a ride and got it warmed up.
Next day I checked the catch can, to my surprise the only thing in the can was clear water, no oil. And yet having checked the oil level I have discovered its overfilled.
So I assume the water is just condensation and the fact theres no oil the bike must be running well and in good order.
That's normal. The clear water is just condensation from the engine breathing, which is exactly what the catch can is supposed to collect. No oil in the can is a good sign it means your rings are sealing well and you're not pulling excessive oil vapor. The overfilled oil level is a separate issue; drain it down to the correct level on the dipstick to avoid causing any problems.
Thanks Roberto, I’ll drain some off, I was planning to do an oil change soon so I’ll make sure I refill correctly then.
I was just a little surprised to get no blow back or oil in the catch can with it overfilled.
I’m with Bubba on this. Oil level up to top bar and it will puke. Typical unless you ride slow all the time. I installed a nice little chrome cone shaped breather from Advance auto parts . And in place of the tubes from the head breathers I drilled/ tapped and put nice small fittings. From these to the cone breather pointing downward below round air filter cover. Hardly noticeable anyway.
Hi Rodent66 yeah I was surprised not to get oil in the catch can as my oil level is above the hatched lines when cold.
Heres the catch can I installed, I could not find black cable ties
One of the best things I did was to throw DK catch can away and run line to ground. Mine misted from the top. Was mounted same place you have yours. Just an option if you start seeing stuff on your exhaust.
