Default Wiring Question

2012 Switchback

I am installing a set of HD passing lamps on the front of my bike. The turn signals I removed from the handlebars had three wires colored: Teal, Lavender and Black. The wires off the turn signals on the passing lamp set up has two wires colored: Lavender and Black.

Do I assume to connect Lavender to Lavender and Black to Black?
What's the Teal for?

Get you a wiring diagram for your bike before you mess things up. A digital volt ohm meter (VOM) is your friend for finding which wires have voltage when making connections.

So the set I bought is European and thus does NOT have running lights, only turn signals. Thus no Teal colored wire. So I just took the ones off the bars and mounted them instead.

I had to buy them from Germany because HD no longer makes them and I couldn't find a set nationwide. There was a set in Finland and in Brazil, but alas neither of the vendors would sell to the USA due to trade restrictions and tariffs. The one I bought in Germany was from a private seller who had to claim it as a "Birthday Gift for a family member valued at less than some certain amount".

@pazfour@yahoo.com I'm not following your question.
The three wire turn signals are most likely running lights and turn with a dual element bulb. The passing lamps are single element, usually not used for turn signals. They would only come on when you hit the turn signal for the side they are on.

If you're removing the three wire lights make sure front running lights are not required by law, I thought they are.

According to MoCo's wiringdiagram for the 2012 Dyna's the left and front front turn signal/running light wiring harness codes are:
pin 1 BK (Black) for Ground
pin 2 empty
pin 3 V (Violet) for turnsignal filament
pin 4 B (Blue) for running lamp filament

The wiringcodes from the mainharness outlet to the directional/runninglight inlet are:
Right:
Pin 1 B(Black) Ground
Pin 2 BE/O (Blue/Orange) left directional lamp filament
Pin 3 BE (Blue) left running light filament

Left:
Pin 1 B(Black) Ground
Pin 2 BE/PK (Blue/Pink) left directional lamp filament
Pin 3 BE (Blue) left running light filament

Picture of the entire setup you bought would help. Passing lamps would be a separate harness, not tied into the turn signals. I guess the passing lamps did not come with the installation instructions? I would assume you need to introduce a new switch to turn them on and off, wires would go to switch. Then power to the switch, good luck.

Here's how I wired the passing lights at my '03 FXD using a relay and fuse

Signal current from switch (86 ==> 85) activates coil; coil activates internal relay switch (30 ==> 87)

30 = + from battery (requires mim 2.5 mm2 or 14 AWG wire)

87 = + to lamps (requires mim 2,5 mm2or 14 AWG wire)

86 = + from switch or headlight wire (to activate relay)

85 = ground

If you want them to work with high beam, splice power source wire to switch to the highbeam wire.

If you want them to work with low beam, splice power source wire to switch to the lowbeam wire.

If you want them to work independently from high/low beam splice power cource wire to switch to the runing lights wire (see your manual for the color, on my 2003FXD it's the blue wire) or run this power source wire to the + on the battery or the aux fuse in the fuse box.
