Default BIGGER sisters cooling method

Is it correct or a complete load ofbull$... that our bigger sisters, mainly FLHT and so on that when trapped in heavy traffic, and in neutral, the rear cylinder disconnects itself in order to cool down? I mean that the injector stops so as the spark and during that time it just sucks air and cools down? I heard it through the grape vine..so I'm rather surprised about anything of that sort going on. How would a one cylinder H-D idle?
Any thoughts on that?

Go get your dyna in some 90-100 degree stop and go traffic for about 30 min. You'll find out...............
Scared me to death the first time it happened to me........

HD offered a d/l for this a few months ago to address the heat issue on the 96 motors. I believe any bike made after date x would contain this correction already loaded into the ecm and the others are offered a d/l from the stealer at the Moco's cost.

My bike has run much cooler since my Thundermax install and the custom map started dumping a little more fuel into the motor.

Runs like crap when that happens. But as soon as you start moving again the cylinder fires right up, just gotta feather the throttle a little at first so it don't die out on ya.

Thanks to all, I thought if it was available, this would only be in the bigger, heavier, less air flowed due to fairings and what have you.... So it is on ALL 96es? good to know so when it happens to me I don't get the fright of my life.
Thanks again.

As far as I can make up from reading the following H-D bulletin, they don't mention the Dynas, at least my FXDC. Quite sure though that the ecm can be set on any 96 CI bike, but as I say, the bulletin does not seem to mention other than the FLHTs and the SE..

SERVICE BULLETIN
2007 ENGINE IDLE TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Purpose
For those riders who frequently find themselves in riding conditions
where the vehicle is subjected to prolonged idle conditions,
an optional dealer enabled engine calibration is
available. This calibration offers limited rear cylinder cooling
with the vehicle stopped while the engine is left at idle. If the
customer decides to delete the rear cylinder cooling, he may
contact the dealer to have this done.
Motorcycles Affected
All 2007 Touring and Police Models (FLHT, FLHTC, FLHTCU,
FLTR, FLHR, FLHRC, FLHRS, FLHX, FLHTCUSE
2
,
FLHRSE
3
, FLHTP, FLHP, and FLHPE).
Required Dealer Action
Activating Engine Idle Temperature
Management System (EITMS)
Upon request of the customer, apply the necessary optional
dealer enabled engine calibration to activate the EITMS
capability using the Digital Technician Tool. Review/explain
the following system function to the customer:
System Function
When engine temperature reaches a pre-determined point,
the EITMS will turn off the rear cylinder fuel injector. Idle
speed will be maintained, however the rear cylinder will
become an “air pump” which will then work to cool the
engine. The conditions required for this to occur are:
●
High engine temperature
●
Engine must be at idle speed
●
Vehicle must not be moving
●
Clutch lever must be pulled in or transmission in
neutral
When these conditions are met, the rear cylinder will stop firing
until one of the conditions listed above are no longer met.
If the vehicle is moving, the engine temperature drops, the
throttle is opened from the idle position, or the clutch is eased
out while in gear the rear cylinder will again fire normally.
When the engine is in EITMS mode you will notice a difference
in idle cadence. Additionally there may be a unique
exhaust odor. These are both considered to be normal conditions.
NOTE
If customer decides he does not want the EITMS, he may
request you to deactivate it. Each motorcycle (as identified
with it’s VIN) is entitled to have EITMS
activated and deactivated
once without charge. Charges for additional EITMS
activations
or
deactivations will be the customer’s responsibility.
Screamin’ Eagle Stage calibrations are available with
active EITMS and without EITMS. Before installing these calibrations
on a customer’s vehicle, ensure the customer customer
understands the EITMS and indicates their choice.
Deactivating
EITMS
Apply the original equipment engine calibration using Digital
Technician.
Credit Procedure-OE Calibrations
Etc, etc.

I would assume they mention the baggers, and not the Dynas, due to the big fairings in front of the bike keeping the engine from receiving less air over it. I guess there were far less complaints filed with the more open Dynas than baggers.

I tell ya, it really freaked me out the first time it happened. Then later while reading the manual it says,"may be mistaken for an engine miss", [:-]Yep. That's it. Scared the hell outta me, though.

i think you guys are mixed up.....all the efi bikes have had the heat management what it does is once the bike hits a hot temp like over 250 or sumthin the computer tells it to add fuel, which causes the bike to run really fat and shotty. this is its attempt to cool its self. now i just read in a hot bike the new 08's have this new setup that if the bike sits at an constant idle (ie a parade or rush hour) it turns the back cly. off to help keep temps down for you and the motor. then once a lil gas is applied the comp. kicks it back on. so theres definatly 2 differant things being talked about here, however both are correct. i believe is was last months hot bike with all the new models in it that talked of this.
