buy it, ride it andhave fun...the forums and the magazines stay alive by bitching about every little thing..i have an 07 FXD with 10800 miles..no problems and if there were its still on warrenty. i think harley makes an excellent motorcycle. i hear all the time about goldwings that spend half their life in the shop...check out their forums...if you only read them you would think that honda has never made a good bike. also, i have subscribed to aim for a while myself and that fellow that does the tech does an excellent job but he is doing it from the perspective of what would be the optimal situation...probably not reality. he was all concerned about the new cam plate that MIGHT wear..if it does, it will be a long time down the road and buy a new one from S&S when you replace it. the bottom line is buy it and have fun...life is too short to worry about what May be..

before you buy your Dyna, go to the nearest indyshop and get a bottle of some proper 75W90 gear-lube.
immediatly after you brind your newFXD home, drop the original rubbish fluid that the bike came filled with from the factory, and refill with that 75W90.
finished. no noise. butter-smooth shifts. high quality clunk.
06 Dynas test year for 6 speed, 07's all bikes get new six speed, for decades Harley trannys have been bullet proof, and in my opinion they still are. I have yet to hear the "fabled" whine in 5th because of it being a straight cut instead of helical cut gear. (maybe my Rineharts are too loud lol) Don't worry a bit about the tranny, worry about the time you spend worrying about the tranny instead. Just go buy it. Peace.
I have the 06, TC88, six-speed, and have not had any problems with my transmission. No whine, no noise, nothing but a great shifting transmission. Might blow up the next time I ride, but it's been good so far.
I did have to have a transmission bearing replaced at 10,000 miles. I think it was just one of those things that happen. Up until thebearing started going south it shifted perfect and no complaints then or now.
Every 6-speed transmission Harley owner I've talked to locally has confirmed they're able to get their transmission to whine in 1st gear with the clutch pulled in while coasting. Such as if you're coming to a stop and you downshift through your gears, get to first and coast to a stop with the clutch pulled in.
The only exception was one bagger owner who said his did not. I explained how and when I was able to get mine to whine. I saw him a couple evenings later while out having a beer and he said he tried it and was able to hear his whine with the radio down.
I made a point to ask most6-speed owner Icame into contact with, because mine was doing this and I was concerned. I'm no longer concerned. The bike has always shifted smoothly enough, finds neutral well, and does not make noise other than in the circumstance I described above.
Again, it's only with the transmission in 1st gear, andwith theclutch pulled in, while coasting. Try it with yours, I wager you'll hear the noise as well.
