Hi VenturaChop, as far as I'm aware the tanks changed in 2004 and have remained the same ever since, it's when they went over to EFI apparently.
Below is a copy of an email from Warrs harley-Davidson in London U.K which is a reply to me when I enquired about tanks and fenders for my 2003 W.G
Hope this helps,
Regards,
Ian
'Hi Ian , unfortunately we do not have any suitable paint sets for your particular year and model . You are correct in thinking the 04 fuel tank is very much different and will not fit. The fenders front and rear remained the same since the 80's until the rear fender went wide in 06 , the fuel tank however ran from 96 - 2003. Hope this information is helpful. Yours Sincerely'
I don't know about the tank problems, I bought a tank from a 2006 EFI FXD which bolted right up to my 2004 carb'd FXD this Spring. No fitment issues and the float and other internals were a direct swap. That is for the FXD, but a WG might be different. Check the part numbers with the dealer's parts books to see if they're the same. If they are, no problems with the swap.
