My virgin took a hit yesterday with a rock. Enjoying the ride until I heard that sickening sound wack. The paint is black and it looks like I could touch it up. I looked in HD catalog to find tough up paint be didn't find it. Has anyone had any luck with touching up chips and if so where did you get the paint to match? My chip is about 1/4" round. Funny how you can lose sleep over something like this.......
Got mine at the stealer, be prepared to spend $25 for the color and clear coat. My chips were under the sissy bar so the touch up although not perfect was good enough.
I get rid of paint chips by filling in the chip with the paint and building it up in layers until the paint in the chip is higher than the surrounding paint. I do this over several days, letting the paint fully harden betweren coats.
When I've got to this stage I let the paint harden for at least 24 hours. I then take a steel rule and wrap a piece of 1200 grade wet and dry paper round it and very gently rub it down smooth. I rub it down until the new paint is slightly proud then stop at that point.
After a week the new paint hardens and shrinks slightly and will be flush with the surrounding paint. I then polish the paint using a a very fine polish or tooth paste. A couple of coats of wax will finish the job and you will not be able to see the chip.
Just pull all the tins off and sand smooth, primeand repaint all of them. Its more expensive than
what others have said but have the paint shop and supplies already why not use em>>[8D]
But without the shop then I would agree with Zodiac, just take your time
I appreciate the suggestions. Ordered the paint from Dealer and will try the build up method. Guess I don't have too much to lose at this point. If I screw it up then I'll take it to the shop. Didn't take long to take my first hit. 1850 miles and a couple of months.
