Personally, I would not drain the tank - I'd fill it up with fresh gas, put in gas stabilizer and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilized gas circulates through everything. An empty tank is an invitation to condensation and potential water damage i.e. Rust. When I've had to store my bike for an extended period of time I've run fogging solution through the carb while running the stabilized gas through the engine. Put a battery tender on the battery, ensure your tires are at the correct pressure, and you should be fine I also drain and replace all fluid in the fall as the oil, mixed withthe by-products of combustion can turn acidic and cause unwanted damage when left sitting. And I do it again before I ride in the spring as I've found a fair amount of condensation in the primary and tranny in the spring. I use inexpensive fluids in the fall when I've put the bike away.Probably an unnecessary step but it works for me.

ensure your tires are at the correct pressure
I've heard that you should let some air out of the tires to prevent deformation. I know that St. Paul HD does that with the hundreds of bikes they store over the winter. Just working on my game plan.

BTW... I'm riding in St Paul, MN until they start laying salt on the roads.

I dont lay mine up I just ride it in anything barring ice and snow, , but if I did, I'd get it on blocks so that the wheels are clear of the ground, and I'd fill the tank with petrol and add stabiliser also make sure the carbs are full of the same mixture. Put new oil the engine, unhook the battery or leave it on a tender, and dont start it till ready to go as it dont do em any good and just causes condensation inside the engine, or so Im told!

oh and injector cleaner can be used as a stabiliser apparently.
