I looked at the OM. Showed capicity at 3 quarts. Looked at the capacities page just like I have with any car I have ever changed oil on. The instruction for 2.5 was on a different page and I looked at it three times before I finally caught it.
Really? I can't imagine where that 1/2qt of oil would hide. My '92 holds 3 qts and I put in 3 every change. Does the crankcase on a TC not get cleaned out to that extent?
Props to you for actually touching your bike with a handtool! There are a ton of people out there scared to death to tackle even the most miniscule task and run straight to their dealer.
Don't rely solely on your owners manual, get the factory service manual and read them both. In fact, read your owners manual like you'll be tested on it... cause you WILL!!
With your new oil filter, any dirt/contaminants in the residual oil left in the motor will be removed, and the old oil will mix with the new.....in other words no big deal.
These guys are right.....it's a learning experience, and now you know. Glad you caught it when you did...when you overfil these motors, it ususally comes out the overflow tube when started up, coating the motor in oil.[&o]
Kudos for doing your own work. I bought the service plan---What a moron... Anyway thanks for posting something that will save the next guys butt in the future
I wouldn't blame anyone for doing this once. I have the shop manual and this point is rather vague. You've got to read it several times before it is clear. Poor writing in my opinion.
When I changed fluids on my 05 WG, I put the correct 2.5qts. of oil in and it came up low. After it was all said and done, I had to put just over 2.75qts. in before dip stick level was correct.
You also have to make sure the bike is sitting correct for what you are checking, on the kick stand for oil, level for trans and primary, etc.
Wait till you go to adjust the primary tensioner. I loosened mine up too much and it fell down. [:@]Ihad to take the primary cover off to get to it. It was really easy to adust with no cover in the way.
But in the end you know what was done on the bike was done correctly.
