I only wish I had seen this thread about 2 hours ago. My 1st oil change & I did the same darn thing. Luckily, I jumped on HDF and did a search and found this thread - confiriming that I had put to much in. I have a tool that will suck fluids back out, and what do you know, I could only get EXACTlY 1/2 a quart out before it started sucking air! So I think I am good now, will have to wait till tommorrow before starting the scoot up - did want to wake the neighbors at 1am.
There's also a system called the Scavenger ... not sure where all you can get them, they run an add in American Iron Magazine ...
You turn your motor over and the oil pump circulates the oil while you're changing it, so it gets rid of the 'dirty left over oil' and doesn't contaminate your new oil ...
Doing a quick 'google' search, found the following link on fleabay

Scavenger Total Oil Change System For Twin Cam A 1999-06
Stop re-running the dirtiest quart of oil through your engine! The Scavenger™ TOTAL Oil Change System is the ONLY way to easily and effectively change all of the oil in many of today’s American V-Twin motorcycle engines. As much as 24 oz. of dirty oil remains in the bottom of dry sump engines - mixing with clean oil as soon as the engine is restarted, shortening the life of your oil and engine. The Scavenger™ pulls this oil and the contaminants out, leaving you with a completely clear engine.
I have an old friend who rides an Ultra Classic ... he uses it and recommended it to me ... just have to take what you'd spent at the stealer to buy the thing ... you don't start saving money changing your own oil until the second and later times ....
I see dealers dump 3 qts in all the time I asked a service guy and he told me wont hurt anything I said how about the oil dripping from the air cleaner he just walked away

How else are they going to try and drum up business?
Here is another dumb question from another newbie. Doesn't the oil filter hold some oil? Looks like about a half quart size to me! Maybe it drains but still seems like when you first fill the level will be higher than after you run the engine.
The level will be higher until you start the engine. I changed my oil last weekend and I put a 1/4 quart into the oil filter when i installed it then put 2 1/4 quarts into the oil filler hole. When I checked the dipstick afterwards it was all the way up to full. After starting the bike then checking the oil again after it was warm it dropped to a little over 3/4 full on the stick.
I worked for a Kawasaki dealer for about 3 years and for a Ford dealer for another 3 so I do all of the wrenching on my bike and my, my wife and my daughters cars.
No matter what the manual says, I never plan on putting what they say. If they say 2.5, Ill put 2 qts in and keep adding oil until it reaches the F line on the dip stick. The same goes for cars. If it say 4 qts, Ill put in 3 and add more until its full.
