Default 1000 mile service

New to HD world...noticed that many, many of you here do not trust dealer service departments...my question then is should I take my new bike to the dealer for the 1000 mile service? I love working on bikes but have not the time anymore to seriously do more than maybe and hour or two of work at a time...also, I see many on here suggest having bikes tuned...what exactly does that mean and what is the price range?

I would. Who knows how it would hold up in court, but most dealers insist on doing the 1k or threaten to void your warranty. They not only change all the fluids, they adjust all the cables and belt, e&. You could buy a service manual (probably should anyway) and do it.

Of course, that's easy for me to say too, because they threw in the service contract with mi bike! Some people don't like it. I need an oil change every three to four weeks, so free oil sounded good to me. I have heard of the 1k being anywhere from $250-$500 depedning are where...

Still, I'd have it done at the dealer. At the very least, gives them you the chance to have them check it over and see if there are any manufacting defects need attention...

If you have not already acquired a service manual get one, it is just about a necessity if you are going to do any of your own work. The dealership can not void the warranty because you do the service on the bike. Just save the receipts and document the work. As far as the dealerships and the quality of the work that they do, it varies wildly from dealership to dealership. Not all of them are bad and certainly not all of them are good. If you are fortunate, and have a dealer that employs knowledgeable mechanics that are concerned with delivering high quality work to the customer, then treat them well. Check with other customers or ask around and see what the general consensus is concerning the quality of service delivered. If you are strapped for time and will be relying on a dealership for most or all of your service then check out all of the local dealers and see who is the best rated. Visit them yourself and see what their attitude toward the customer is like. If you are going to make changes to the bikes intake, exhaust, or engine then some type of tuning will be required. The cost can range from a few hundred dollars for freer flowing air cleaner, freer flowing exhaust, and fuel management controller to well in excess of a thousand dollars for high end versions of the same.

Welcome to the forum.

When I had my Sportster I had the dealer service it until they screwed up, they did not seat the derby cover gasket right and it started leaking while I was riding and soaked the rear tire and brakes with Syn3. I did not notice the leak until I went to make a sweeping left hand turn at 35 mph and the back kicked out like a dirt track racer. I was able to keep the bike up but it scared the sh_t out of me. I bought the Dyna at different Stealer and a serivce manual at the same time. Though this dealers service dept my be better I am not taking a chance, they will not see my bike unless it is for waranty work.

David, was the Derby cover stock or after market? I ask because I just added a new after market cover and the gaskets is fifferent than the stock cover gasket. I did the change myself and from what you said I don't need a leak.
