With a comfortable seat I now have and my stock shocks
I am very satisfied with my ride.
I would like to sit a little lower however I'm not going to take a chance
on messing up what I have now for a lower look.

I could go forward and possibly develop them for you or just order Öhlins for the Softail. We are a suspension company and as well a service center and a distributorfor Öhlins. Öhlins makes softail shocks. I do not know how they work. Where do you live and can we work with you to develop the Penske’s for your bike if you like? I cannot get to your location from here in POST mode. I can positively tell you this, someone needs to be in a location to put on the shocks, test them and provide knowledgeable feedback to perfect the valving and less importantly spring rate (easier to do). I see people putting on premium shocks and not get the desired results I know the equipment is capable of. The customer (not mine) did not know the difference what great shocks are. Tuning the shocks is what make them great. Read our feedback on our equipment and service, desired superior performance is only attained by hard work. No “Plunk Your Magic Twanger, Froggy” crap! You can call me anytime toll free 1-866-899-5962 for a feasibility evaluation of the product in question. We are working presently, finishing off the FL shocks. I never tried to revamp suspension on a Softail as our priority is stuff that goes 200mph around the track. The same principles apply and one of the significant by-products with full ground contact is a very smooth ride and naturally handling as well as safety. I personally like the Penske design over the Öhlins design but we make more and sell more Öhlins due to better advertisement. It is what the customer wants. I hope I have answered your question.

What's the attraction to new shocks on these bikes? Easy to do while on the lift!

B
Stock shocks are adequate at best, IMO. There's nothing wrong with them for routine riding, I suppose. But when you hit some rough riding, or add a decent load, they fall on their face.

New shocks will do two things for you. 1. can adjust ride height up or down. 2. Adjust the spring and shock functionto fityour type of riding.

I strongly suggest to each new bike owner I meet that they replace the stock shocks. The usual response is that they feel "fine". But after they pick the appropriate replacement I often hear, "I didn't know they were so bad".

The other thing I strongly recommend Is gold valves from Race Tech. It's inexpensive, a fairly easy install, and makes a huge improvement in handeling and ride. Makes it ride like a whole new machine. Better than new rear shocks.

I believe a good handeling and riding machine is not just for the experianced hard rider. I'm an experianced rider, but apretty mellow rider. I don't bang through the canyons at top speed. I generally follow the speed limit and the flow of traffic. But I do like a good ride. And I can appreciate good handeling on the rare occasion when I need it.If your suspension is adequate for your average daily ride, what happens when you get in trouble and need to make emergency manouvers? You quickly overwhelm the capabilities of the machine, which will then quickly overwhelm your own abilities. You don't need sport bike handeling, but it should be better than adequate.

But, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

A great shock makes the rear of the bike not move up and down. The wheel moves and your frame does not. That is what a "Shock" does. You cannot get a $100 e-Bay shock to do that. It costs money to buy quality equipment. Most (99%) of the stuff sold for Harley is absolute junk the people in the Harley community are Brand Name Burned with the hype. If a rider was to experience the ride and handling of real suspension, than they would have something to compare to. Too much emphasis on chrome and not enough on performance.

I would add the following to this....a great shock keeps the tire in contact with the road without upsetting the bike.
