Default simple question please help

I dont know my terms but I will do my best to describe. I want to remove bolts in chrome/steel "strip"the just behind the seat and put in my own custom brackets for a sissy bar I'm building. The problem occurred when I removed the bolt and the parts behind the chrome and steel stayed there. I thought that when I removed the bolt that all would come out and I could reassemble with my bracket in there also, but I guess not. How do you remove the parts behind there? How is a sissy bar bracket bought from a retailer attached in the front hole-- not concerned about the back hole really.

hey bud i would love to help you out but i am just not understanding what you are talking about... you are refering to the chrome rear strut cover? or the black under it... the black under it is your rear struts and that is part of the frame... i have a detachable sissy bar on mine and it was a back plate and longer bolts that bolted on it was simple... if you want to take off the covers you are going to have to remove your rear turn signals as well... i am not sure if this helps at all... some pics would help the master minds on here help ya out

Street ....

There are 4 fasteners, 2 in each strut, that hold your fender in place. The rear are actually bolts that go in from the inside of the fender and threadin tothe stalksof your rear signals. The front fasteners are torx heads thatmountfrom the outside. Now, if you look closely inside your fender.... either side ....you will seea support strip that is held in place by the fasteners on that side(front and rear).I believe this strip is what you wantgone ..... and you will need to removeboth fastenerson each side to get that out. Wereit me, I'dleave that support in place if possible.

Also ..... You will probably needa lift to getthe tire clearance toremove those rear fasteners. And,work on one side at a time .... take all four of those fasteners out and you'll probably wish you had 4 hands .... 2 to hold the fender back in place while the other two try and thread bolts !!

EDIT : There are also two Spacers/Washers that are glued in place on the fender wherethose front bolts are. They are there so that your fender doesnt flare out to the struts when you torque it all down.

Hope this helps !!

I know the strip that you are talking about and I would like to remove nothing if possible just slip in a 3/16thick piece of steel in and replace the bolt.

My plan is toattach sissy bar to metal tabs sticking up from both strut bolts and then a support bar going back to the two up seat bolt----possible?

H-D Rigid sideplates arent flat .... they are bent at the bottom and those spacers in the frontstay in there on install. However, I do believe you should be able to use the urethane washers and some ingenuity to get what you want and not damage anything. I'm looking forward to pics of your work when you complete it!!
