Default Sissy bar mounting plates

OK, so I feel really stupid starting this thread but I am missing something. I have a 93 Lowrider and got some NOS side plates off Ebay cheap, they were still sealed and marked 93 FXDL so I know they are the correct part. It looks so simple, pull the front bolt and loosen the rear one (where my turn signal is mounted) and slide the plate over the rear bolt and run the front one back in through the plate. I have loosened everything up so I can pull it away from the fender about 1/2 or 3/4 inches and the back still wont slide over the bolt, the bolt is too large for the slot. The front bolt hole has some kind of sleeve that runs through the fender and still hasnt come out yet. It looks like such a simple add-on but obviously I am missing something. Have I just not gotten it out far enough yet? I am sure it is something incredibly simple but I am missing it. Obviously, I am NOT an experienced motorcycle mechanic. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Remove the upper shock bolts to allow the rear fender supports to come all the way off, the plates then go under the chrome covers...I am not computer savy enough to post a link here but if you go to Ronnies Harley parts finder and enter your bike in description search you will find the blow up of the parts which should give you an idea of the order of disassembly/reassembly of the struts with sissy bar supports in place.

Thanks, it took a few beers but I figured it out, the slot in the rear was for the wiring...duh. The front assemble was springloaded or something, i was able to push it back with a screwdriver until the plate covered it and then slide the plate and wiggle it till it popped through.
