Hopefully you can help me figure out whats up with my oil level. I know there are a million posts about this but I have to give my problem. First, I check my oil after riding bike for 20 minutes, I then let it idle for a couple of minutes, the shut it off, and check level on kick stand.
So, had my 1000 mile service, checked it when I got home. Oil was to full line, no problem. Over the last 1600 miles since, I have been checking it and its been fine. However, in the last 600 miles I have seen it slowly go down to half way on the cross-hatch. So I dont see any puddles of oil nor any oil on engine or in pipes or on a/c. So where did the oil go? So I went and got a quart of oil and filled it back up to full line. Now the next morning, I go out and check the cold level and its at the same level as the hot level! WTF? Now I don't know if I should run the bike right now because of over-fill.
checking your oil can drive you crazy that's why i always check mine cold, remember one thing once you shut the bike off you still have oilin the engine that hasn't dripped all the way in the pan give it awhile after shutting bike off to drip into the pan then check it about 1/2 hr or so dynas only take 2 1/2 quarts of oil hope this helps

Not true. The engine is a dry sump design. The oil must be pumped to the oil tank by the scavenge element of the oil pump. Once the engine is shutdown there is not pump to do this. Any oil in the upper part of the engine may drain to the sump but will not get to the oil tank (pan). Sometimes, depending on the condition of you pump, you may have oil seep back into the engine sump around the elements of the oil pump. If this condition exists, waiting longer will only give you a false "low oil" indication.
Can't help you. Always check mine cold and it fluctuates, but I check always check mine before a ride (usually daily).
Fill with 2.5 quarts when I change it, and don't worry about it, unless it shows up too low, then I follow the HD procedure hot.
