The light on my FXDLI will actually go out after about a half an hour under these conditions.
I think the gauge is very conservative because EFI engines are a pain to get started after
they have been run out of fuel.

Now I can speak from experiance. Since I read this post, I watched to see what happens. Mine is on when I start the bike on the stand with <1/2 tank, just like you said. But within about a mile it shuts off. It's such a small light, I don't think it's a big deal.
As for accuracy, they never have been. On any H-D model. Use the trip odometer instead.
