A good dyno tune requires the tech to run your engine throughout the rpm range and puts a certain amount of stress on your engine in the process. This not something you want done until your engine is broken in. Having the SERT already makes dyno tuning the best way to get your engine to run the best it can - no popping, no backfiring, and maximize on throttle response and torque/hp from idle up through the entire rev range (assuming you get a good tech that knows what he's doing!). Only down side is your bike will run a richer (not really bad, since stock is lean thanks to the EPA, and pipes/intake lean it out even more), but will lower your mpg.
When I had my 06 put on the dyno in Gettyburgs a couple years back, they had me sign a release which stated I had no less than 2500 actual miles on the bike. The dyno puts the bike underload to check the HP/TQ (my simplified version).
I don't know for sure, but 1000 miles is probably good before the dyno tune.
Are you happy with the way it runs? If so you can let the Dyno tuning go but if you want to really know how well your bike is running you gotta get it dynoed.$85 an hour for three hours don't sound too bad, you don't want to know what I paid to the only tuner in the county that works on Harleys .IMO it was money well spent but I'm the type of person who has to absolutely know thier bike is running right or I'm not happy, actually mine ran like crap before I had it dynoed but that's another story.Your bike wouldn't be fully broken in at 1000 mi why not wait till 5000 mi and switch to synthetic oil before you get it tuned, it might get you another HP or 2 in the process.
You want 1000 miles minimum, to break the motor in,before putting it through the paces on a dyno from what I hear. You won't realize the potential of the SERT unless you get it dyno tuned. If you spent the money for the SERT over a less-tunable tuner, you should spend the money to get the dyno work done and get the most out of your setup.
