Been there done that my friend. Was extremely disappointed. I found out where a dealer for them would be at Myrtle Beach this fall and went there prepared to pay $175 for one of their helmets. First off, they don't have 1" of padding which is a good thing for me but the new law specifies that as a minimum. Secondly, they still give the mushroom head. If I've got to live with that retard look, I'm not paying almost $200 for it. Plenty of decent DOT approved half helmets out there for around $50. Last one I looked at I may can live with was a Fulmer AF270 Hombre.
I gave up trying to find a half helmet that didn't give the mushroom look, after running into the same disappointment after disappointment as you.
I purchased a full-face modular flip-up helmet. For summer I'm going to get a 3/4 helmet if I find the full face too hot.
That's what I have as well. I have a Fulmer Modus full-face with the front part the flips up and the shield flips up as well. I even went out and bought a nice chrome shield for it (which I soon scratched the chit out of on my garage door) so I don't even have to dick with putting sunglasses on under it. It's a very comfortable helmet. But, I tell you, I didn't realize how limiting it is as far as sound and visibility, until I rode for the first time with a half helmet on. I can't help the "mug" I was born with but the 3/4 helmets make me look like one of those football players back in the day before they had facemasks and it still limits my hearing more than I like.
When the law goes into effect, it will still be cold and I'll be okay with my full-face for a while. But, I'm somewhat of a sweathog anyway and a full helmet is just too unbearable for me with the heat and humidity we have in the summer.

Bought a nice older but unused metalflake stars & stripe easy rider style 3/4 helmet from hawgcity but it's not DOT. Good product and service in my experience and not outrageously priced.
I almost bought one of those Stars and Stripes from HawgCity.... but I'm still wearing the Novelty helmet I bought in 1971... No foam, no liner, and it's plastic... Stap is fine though.. I think I paid 12.00 for it at a swap meet..
Be careful with those helmets, the original foam turns to dust when you touch it. If they are re-lined, they do not meet DOT standards.
They are basically novelty lids.
