Default dyna front springs

The front end on my '08 FXD is 'soft'. i've compared it to every Dyna i can find and it is the softest. At approx. 3500 miles i dropped it off at HD (they also did my 1000 and Stage 1 remapping). The tech agreed it was soft but after having a few days did nothing and say it's within specs.

anyone else had a similar problem? i know i can replace the springs and fork oil (I plan to but prefer to work on my bike because i want to not because i have to).

Jim C.,
I just bought a used 2006 Dyna Low Rider (8,500 miles) and the front forks are super soft. Softer than I would like. I, also, have not found another Dyna of any variety that feels softer. The nose dive under anything beyond the most moderate braking is too much. I even suspect that the previous may have put a lowering kit on it since there is so little travel left. I am going to take it to a shop in the next week or so and see if they can tell me if it was lowered. In the process I hope to learn more about 06 and later forks.

I will ask about progressive springs and / or adding spacers to pre-load the springs and the correct amount of fork oil while I am there. I presume that you bought your bike new since it is an 08. True?

I'll post my findings. Peace . . .

You might consider Works Performance Dual Rate front springs:

http://www.worksperformance.com/html/street.html

In each fork leg the stock Dyna spring is replaced with two springs. The springs are of different lengths and tension.

One spring is short and relatively "soft", The longer spring is quite firm. During normal riding on relatively smooth
roads, the short "soft" spring absorbs small bumps and gives a comfortable ride. Under heavier compression, for example
braking, the "firm" spring takes over and prevents dive.

Depending on your weight and riding style, spacers of various lengths, inside the short "soft" springs, are
used to set preload and the transition point between the "soft" and "firm" suspension.

This system works well on my FXD.

Per my previous post, I took the bike into an independent shop and the guy there thought that the forks felt normal. I do have a chrome kit that covers up part of the travel and makes it look like less than it is but, for me, they are still on the soft side.

The guy at the shop was nice but he seemed preoccupeid with the other work going on in the shop so I didn't stick around to pick his brain. I will hit him up on the issue again when I am spending money with him for something else. In the mean time I will continue lurking on the subject of prpgressive springs and such.

Peace . . .

I agree that they are soft. Mine were the exact same way. I had my dealer put in thicker oil which made a pretty good difference and it wasn't too expensive. They said this is the easiest solution and if I wasnt happy with this then the next step would be to go with stiffer springs.
Not sure why they are so soft but the nose dive got very very old. I would try changing to the thicker oil first then go from there.
