Domenic, I doubt they lied to you on purpose (can't believe I'm defending the stealer).
If you haven't added a sissybar, the kit is needed as stated to keep the tire from contacting the wiring.
When I decided to go with the 180, I just told the parts guy I didn't need the kit, and I would take responsibily if the tires rubbed the wiring. The guys I deal with are good folks, and were just following what the book tells them. Most parts folks aren't installing tires, these days, or anything else for that matter. I think they rely on the customers needs, wants and knowledge as much as we rely on them.............. Sorry to go on about it.
The \\; SE 180 is a very good deal IMO, and I think it handles/rides at least \\;as well as the Metz 160. My 180 was the same price as the stock HD Dunlop 160 replacement (I couldn't believe it).
What I noticed is the SE 180 accomplished the same results as the Metz 160 cheaper, and looks a lot better, too. That baby really fills out the fender nicely.
Your bike is lookin real fine.
Let us know how you are liking your SE 180, and what kind of mileage you get out of it.

I agree with Doug they are just doing what the MoCo tells them they should do Many dealers will not install with out the kit because thats what the book says and if they have a problem MoCo will beg off and they will be on their own
I don't get it. \\; So a guy comes into the dealer with a bike with detach sideplates on it, they sell you this 180 "kit" with new sideplates, and you leave a happy customer. \\; So did they swap any plates, and if so, do you get the old ones back? \\; If not, are you telling me you pay for a kit that never leaves the store?
I had the wide tire kit installed and it looks awesome. I also have 11" progressives in the back and was concerned about safe and proper fit. It worked and the shop had one of there big boys test ride it to make sure nothing rubbed or bottomed out. No problems. I'm taking the bike to Portland from seattle tomorrow so hopefully all is good. Thats about 190 miles. I don't have a picture with the new tire installed yet.

Old thread. \\; The tire lasted for 8500k a bit better than I thought. \\; I was changing out the rear brake pads so I decided to change out the tire also. \\; I probably had another 1500 miles to go before it was due. \\; There is no plates swapped out just some brackets to move the wiring. \\;
