What nuts and bolts should I be checking and how often? Most of the time I check tires, brakes, and oil then go. How many miles are you putting on before a "complete" inspection and what does that include. I'm new to owning a nice bike and want to keep it that way. I plan to get the service manual so I can do more things on my own. Hatewhat the 1000 mile service cost and the 5000 is coming quick!
I don't do a thorough inspection every ridecause I ride every day,but I clean my bike often enough that I'm usually aware when something is loose or I hear it rattling.
Some of the bolts I've found loose are both lower pinch bolts, tank bolts, upper engine mount, battery wires where they attach to the terminals, upper chain guard, sissybar side mounts, riser top plate and I'm probably not remembering all. Keep in mind this is with dealer service at every recommended interval. Last check was 25 k service.
While I hate to say this - buy the service manual - it will give you a list of what is a crital fastener and needs to be checked as well as how often. Over an above those recommended in the service schedule I don't check nut or bolts unless I can visually see something loose, but thats just me.
I recently changed my exhaust and low and behold. All four of the bolts holding my old exahust were so loose I could of taken them off by hand. It was a wonder I didnt have an exhaust leak. My bike had less than 300 miles on it.
