Cam Holes??
I have an 01 FXD and I replaced the cam cover with a chrome one that is from a 2000 FXD. The only diffrence I found was that there is a hole behind the timing cover. Do I need to buy a gasket to go behind the timing cover to prevent oil from leaking through or does oil even get through that hole? Also, is there a plug that I need to buy to provent oil getting into the timing area? Not sure if this will be a problem, but it sure looks a ton better with the chrome one. Daytona in Feb soI need to get all this buttoned up soon!
You sure that came off an 2000 FXD, I believe that came off a Softail because the STs hve the cam position sensor back there. If those holes are not plugged it will absolutely leak oil & blow back on everything behind it. If you can, return it, it is not the right one for your bike. Take the insert off the cover you have on the bike now & you will not see any holes.
I think you need to find a chrome cover made for your year bike. I don't remember seeing any hole, or plug,in any of my newer TC's - just an empty cavity with a timing cover (and no gasket). Don't think they make a plug or a gasket as the hole would be sealed bytheolder style electronic ignition system which would go into the cover you have. Could be wrong and maybe someone with a little better knowledge of 2000 and 2001 bikes will jump in - I went from EVO's right to an 04.
This is the discription from the person that I bought it from. The dimensions of the cover are exactly the same, but the hole is the only diffrence that I can see!

I got it for a steal on e-bay so that is why I got it. But just to be sure you are saying that this year cam cover on my 01 Dyna is OK and there should not be any issues! Like I said I am going to Daytona and I don't want this to cause any problems in the sunshine state!!!!!!!
The reason I know that part came off a ST is because a friend who has a Heritage ST had an oil leak that 7 times to the dealership couldn't find or fix. We finally found it, one of the seals/o-rings between the cam sensor & one of those holes was leaking.
Sorry, but it is going to leak unless you can plug them.
