I could not stand it any longer and had to go for a ride last evening. The streets were starting to dry out so I went for it. It was 36 degrees, and I rode 15 miles. I wore 2 sweatshirts under my leather jacket, and sweat pants under my jeans. I felt ok except my hands started getting cold, and my ankles were starting to hurt. My chin and neck were getting cold also. I want to get a jump on the springtime riding. I would like to get heated gloves, socks and a vest if I can afford it. My boss is going to buy me a clamp on windshield that should stop my face from freezing.
I found out that it is a bad situation to be behind vehicles that have a lot of snow on the roof, dodging the chunks of snow that fall off is scary plus they make the road wet and slick.
The windshield will help a lot................. If you are getting heated gloves, you should get a heated jacket liner, not a vest.
The gloves will plug right into the sleeves on the liner and you won't have to fish the glove wiring through your clothing. Makes dressing for cold weather riding much faster and easier.
I definitely relate to your ride. I put 150 miles on the bike yesterday. Temps in 30's when I started and in upper 40's when I got back home. Today, I'm definitely staying inside (not on the bike anyway). Currently light snow, temp 7°, winds out of the NW at 31mph and expecting winds of 45-50 mph as we move closer to noon. Just when I could see my yard again, it's white.[:@]
Thanks for the tip on the jacket liner. I wont be working today becase it's snowing in California.
This is the view out my front door. I think I'll drive to the BMW shop in Roseville and look at the heated riding gear. No work, no riding, no wife to lovehttps://www.hdforums.com/m_2745220/tm.htm. Talk about cabin fever. When is Global Warming going to start paying off ?
Hi, Bowdoinham, Maine here. Was lucky enough to be able to ride on Jan 15th. Roads were relatively clear but it was 28 degrees. Wore long underwear with jeans and an LL Bean flannel lined shirt. Heavy jacket with an extra sweatshirt, wool socks and heavy boots. Also wore a scarf and with the full face helmet they kept me somewhat warm ...... well, lets say I wasn't too uncomfortable. Only thing that really got cold was my hands and face (Moustache had icicles hanging off of it LOL). Rode for about 2 hours before I couldn't take it anymore.
Bike got extremely dirty to say the least but I washed it in my garage last Saturday and all is good now.
IHaven't been able to ride since but I will beheaded down to Daytona for Bike Week next month.
I say take every opportunity you can to ride but most importantly ...... be safe!
I just ordered some good stuff from these guys and havenât been able to get a better price. Took three days for the order to get to me, not dad. Enjoy the winter riding. http://www.tonker.com/tour_master.php
It got up to 40 yesterday in MN, I considered getting the bike out for a quickie, but now it's -4 again. Only another month and a half until riding season.
I will ride when the ice is off the roads and it's over 20. I will ride below 20, but not very happily. Usually Long underwear, T shirt, jeans, leathers, snowmobile gloves and full face helmet.
holy c... time to move to a warmer climate...if your from the north run like your from the north...i don't take the scoot out when its covered in cinders and brine but if you need it that bad it might be time to relocate...there will be the perfect time to ride soon enough and by the way the roads up north are worth the wait if you ask me
I road to work both days this last weekend. Mornings were a crisp 26 degrees, but the afternoons/evenings were near 50. The Gerbing gloves and Warm and Safe jacker liner were just what the doctor ordered. Of course wore my chaps too, but the 17 mile ride was a breeze! Just remember to take a neck warmer of some sort along. Helps keep some of the air out of the helmet, as well as keeping the neck warm. Only thing that would be more perfect would be a snowmobile helmet with heated visor, now that would be the icing on the cake!!! Ride safe!
