I got my service manual and plan to do as much work as I possible can on my own bike. As I looked though it I noticed that everything has a specific torque. Is a torque wrench a must have or should I just be aware that some things need to be tighter than others?I’m kind of thinking that its not needed but wanted to check with otherthat are more knowledgeable than me.
Absolutely a must have. You'll save plenty doing your own work to justify the wrench. You probably actually need 2 depending on what work you do - 1 for foot lbs and 1 for inch lbs. Overtighten stuff and it could break. Undertighten things and they tend to fall off. Invest heavily in loctite as well. I'm collecting tools as I need them but 2 of the first things I bought were a bike lift and a torque wrench.
Yes!
Buy both. 3/8ths drive inch pounds and 1/2 drive foot pounds.
You will use the inch pound wrench more, but you will come across some important bolts that will require the foot pouns wrench.
Thanks guys. Guess I lied to the old lady when I said that I have everything I need now. Theres always soemthing eles isn't there! Any suggestion on types or just a quality name in tools and gettwo sizes?
indeed, a torque wrench is necessary....however, i did notice (and maybe a few of you have also) that the torque specs on some things seem a little off ...??
specifically, that upper rear shock bolt....manual has them at about 70 ft lbs... seems really impossible considering those chinsy chrome covered plastic shock bolt covers.... impossible to really hold in place while torquing.... anything over 50-55 pounds is seriously going to damage, if not, bend the things!
I use a craftsman, I could not afford teh snap on I wanted. just make sure when you get the inch lb wrench you get one that will torque low enough. then make sure the ft lb one starts where the in lb ends.
i have found that I use my Snap-ON 3/8 drive ft. pound wrench the most it goes from 5-75 pounds and is smaller than my bigger wrenches, buy quality and remember a torque wrench is a precision measuring device and needs to be calibrated every so often.
