Great post! I think Old School isa state of mind for that individual whom choses to use the term. Meaning, what is old school for me is what I remeber about growing up and the things I had and didn't have or things I did. Even thoughIwas only born back in 79' I think back and see my self buying 5 cent jolly ranchers at the Circle K around the corner, or like the other day I watched this movie Rad that cam out in 86 and just seeing those clothes and sitting there thinking "Dam, and to think, I wore that ****". To me that is old school, an individual term used by someone remembering something in there past that is no longer mainstream as a holein society. Agian, great post, I love hearing stories from those that have been around and done it all (those that creat experiance)and thanks. Later.

Lets hear some more great memories from the experience ppl.

Mud -

Just noticed the price of gas in your photo ... $0.239 per gallon! I remember gas being that cheap as a little kid, but I didn't start buying it until after the Arab oil embargo. Is that you? Or, your older brother (i.e., Old School!)? An awesome panhead ....

I'm 30. To me, old school is anything before my time. I guess it's just a nice way of saying "older than me".

Anyway, Wiki (from Doug's link) defines "old school" when referenced to custom motorcycles as:

ORIGINAL: Wikipedia

In the realm of custom motorcycles, many features which were popular in the 1960's and 1970's are considered Old School by today's standards. This includes such things as ape hanger handlebars, king & queen type seats, and unusually tall sissy bars.

Wow, nice post!!!

I am turning 35 next week... Old School is what I have become to the younger people (not the HD crowd, but to the clubbing scene and music)... Old school is also what my son will start thinking of me! This is one main reason I bought my Harley... to look young and cool for my son! I hope I keep doing it way into my old days!

thanks again for the post.

Great post, Clutch. Glad you worked so hard on it.

The first time I heard the term "old school" was at the shooting range, when a friend told me he wanted one of those old school revolvers like the Ruger Blackhawk.

I thought it was a cool term, but it is getting a bit trite.

Great Post!!!

It made me think of a conversation I had last week at a dealership.
I was asking the parts guy about a certain part and price, I was amazed by the response of how much a bent strip of metal with holes in it would cost. Iresponded that I could make the part, and probably improve the design.

The manager was standing a few feet away, (obviously not minding his own business),he butted in saying how long it would take to make the part and asked how much my time is worth? My response was, "I make stuff during my down time, while others may watch TV or whatever". That response did shut him up, but he walked away shaking his head in almost disgust.

Your post made me realize something, after all these years, I thoughtI was just a cheap bastard for making my own stuff and parts for the bike. Maybe I'm not so cheap after all, maybe I'm just "Old School".

Clutch, YOUR old school. To me anything w/ a shovel, pan, or knuck is old school! But I'm only 26, however I've been in the Air Force for 8 years and guys coming in now are calling me old school!!! That's BS, but what other career can you retire at 20 years? Not many, so those of us that do stay in and are about to retire, while guys come into the service that were born after I enlisted! 40 years from now, I wonder what guys are going to say when I tell them that I had a 2006 FXDLI w/ a twin cam motor? They'll probably laugh and drive off on their rocker-z's (haha) and cruise around on flux capacitors!

I think Sucker Punch Sally's bikes are pretty old school looking... in my eyes anyway.

Nice article Clutch!

Awesome story. That should give people a little inspiration to do a little more on their own. Just like in another thread about the willie G. skulls. Seems like everyone has it. Not saying they are bad or ugly. It just seems you see alot of the same and not much originality. In my case being in the military I really don't have the time to do any majordo it yourself customization. I just try to keep my eyes open for something different and do it a little bit at a time. That isone of the joys of owning aHD. It is a constant work in progress. Again. Great story. That is called keeping it real!
