Thanks for the input everyone! I do like the bike and the price, but I really do not like that touring look it has. So I'm trying to figure out how easily I could convert it without dishing out tons of money to make it happen.

I would like to achieve the FXD look so what all would I have to do to make that happen besides taking the bags and shield/fairing off?

Since you may want to remove the fairing and the bags, you may consider putting all your parts you take off on Ebay. There are prbably a few people that want to use your stuff and you could roll the profit into fixing up your bike. Everybody wins!

I went from a sportster to a Dyna and I am very happy with the upgrade. The 2 best things were more power and less vibration.

I was in the market for a 1200 Sportster as my first cycle, but fear I will want something a little bigger. I found a 2001 FXDXT with 25,000 miles in great shape for $6900. Does that seem like a fair price, and is 25,000 miles considered to be "high mileage" when dealing with motorcycles?

After looking around in auto locators and on the internet, these bikes are selling for between $8500 to $10,000 so the price seems good I guess? I don't like the idea of buying a bike w/ 25,000 miles, but I guess it could be worse? Before the bike leaves the seller they go over everything, issue state inspection, etc so they are very good in that aspect.

I would like to make this FXDXT look more like an FXD (since I like that look better) which would obviously entail removing the fairing and bags. What other differences are there? Is it easy to lower the back end?

If you end up getting the bike and want to sell the bags, shoot me a PM and let me know what you want for them.

Does anyone have any input on what I would have to do to this t-sport in order to make it look more like an FXD or FXD low? I would assume replacing the rear shocks, but what about the front end? And what would that cost me roughly? I really do not like how much higher it sits right now

Thanks!!

I think just the cost of shocks, and sliding the forks up in the triple trees.

That FXDXT has a very good reputation............. My 06 FXDI is pushing 25K and I don't consider that to be high miles.
Looks like it only had 3-5k miles put on it a year. Not bad, 1 oil change per year?

I think the first thing I would do is put all new fluids in it ad a new set of brakes (check 'em 1st).

The easy thing would be to raise the forks through the triple trees till the bike's at the right height to match your new rear shocks. If it were me though I'd probably try to find an FXD owner who wants a sportier ride and swap the front and back suspension.

if you're not sure about the what so called high mileage, may be you should be more patience and look for another FXDXT that suits your budget. Probably dont show "oh i want it so much" face to the dealer you talked about, you could still bargain.

dont want a touring look? take off the bags and windshield. install the stock handle bar. there, a bigger sportster called fxdxt.

whats the difference between fxdx and fxdxt any way?

The FXDXT has lugs cast into the trees for the fairing and there's a cluster of wires exposed when the fairing is removed; you can fit shorter rear shocks and drop the tubes into the trees (I did on my FXDXT) but you should be able to find a cheap low-mile FXD and then you'd be there; especially if you're not interested in the capabilities of the FXDXT. Also, there's saddlebag mounting lugs on the back bottom of the rear fender.....same frame/rake as the fxd.
