Default 2006 dyna

i'm looking for some opinions on the 06 dynas. I've had 2 dynas (both fxd) before and loved them. My last bike i decided to try a softail for the first time (deluxe) I can't say i've been overly impressed with the handling or the 88b motor.

I'm trying to decide if i should keep the softail, buy an 05 dyna (then i know what i'm getting) or an 06 dyna.

I'm a little hesitant to pick up an 06 dyna because it's a first year production. I'm not a fan of the new clutch and especially not the closed loop system.

So if you have an 06 dyna i'd like to hear your opinions on your bike. I'd especially like to hear from those who have owned other harleys so they have something to compare to...

1. Did you change pipes? Full exhaust or slip on?
2. Did you remap? HD or aftermarket
3. How do you like the 6 speed?
4. How is the new clutch?
5. How does your passenger (if you carry one) like the swingarm mounted pegs?
6. Any other general observations comparing it to older dynas or other HD's

any other info or opinions is appreciated.

SE Pro II slip-ons, but the older ones, not with all the emission control (dont need it here)

2. Did you remap? HD or aftermarket
HD - SE Stage I plus download

3. How do you like the 6 speed?
Love it

4. How is the new clutch?
Perfect - little finger even works it

5. How does your passenger (if you carry one) like the swingarm mounted pegs?
Only had a few and there was no comment

The best opinion is yours, test drive the new 06's before you decide.

Check out the new issue of American Iron. There's a really good article on the new Dynas. They love them. They say the '06 Super Glide is Harley's best handling big twin.

I wish I could find that mag around here in NJ. Don't suppose they have a website with that article do they?
Thanks man

1. Did you change pipes? Full exhaust or slip on?

I went with SEII slipons, but might try some Jug Huggers this summer

2. Did you remap? HD or aftermarket

HD download. Once I added the SE/AC, I now need a SERT.

3. How do you like the 6 speed?

Love it. No gripes.

4. How is the new clutch?

Sweet. I have no idea why you wouldn't like it. Guys who own older HDs try my clutch and then go upgrade.

5. How does your passenger (if you carry one) like the swingarm mounted pegs?

This is a non-issue. The peg mounts attach near the pivot of the swingarm. I would guess at full compression of the rear shocks, the pegs might move 1/8th of an inch, if that.

6. Any other general observations comparing it to older dynas or other HD's

It's the nicest riding bike I've ever sat on.

dont worry about closed loop. when you install power commander, race tuner, thundermax, etc. it will not be a concern.
i use thundermax
6 speed is very slick
new clutch is the best, almost think its jap!
my passenger loves the ride and didnt notice the new peg mounts
the suspension and handlin are superior to anything H_D has ever offerd.

thanks guys. I'm thinking i'll probably be leaving the softail at the dealership soon and bringing home another dyna.

The reason I'm not a fan of the new clutch is I like the feel of the heavy clutch and the 'clunk' when i stomp it into gear. Just feels more like a harley than a honda. No biggy, just like the feel of it.

Good to hear the pegs are a non issue. I thought they would be since they're mounted right at the front of the swingarm.

Guess i'll go buy an american iron magazine to tide me over until my dealer re-opens. My dealer is closed for 1 1/2 weeks in Jan. Business must be booming to be able to afford that.

More opinions the better. thanks again.

another question...

anyone have any issues with the key placement. I found it extremely awkward when i test drove one.
I think i like the old placement behind the leg better.

once you use the key a few times it is ok. my complaint would be that when you turn off the key, it falls out! this may be good as it makes you habitually put the key in your pocket, but just pulling it around the yard to wash, etc. the key can fall out, possibly lost. you also are very limited as to what you have your key attached to because of potential scratching of paint.
