Default Belt alignment is off on 96 Dyna

I replaced the rear brake caliper and bracket on my 96 FXDWG with chromed pieces. When I buttoned everything back up I noticed that the belt is now rubbing the against the frame. Looking from the rear of the bike toward the front, the belt is all the way to the right on the drive sprocket and rubbing again the rear foot peg bracket. I have doubled checked the axle alignment, and spacers. There is one spacer on the brake side of the axle and 2 spacers on the sprocket side. I've can't find any help in the CLYMER manual either. The new chrome bracket and caliperare the same size and width as the ones I replaced. Anyone know what the problem is?? I need my bike ready for Daytona!

I've found the MoCo manual to be moredetailed than the Clymer, IMHO.
Sorry I can't help you with your problem, as my manual is for a '06 not a 96. But Iknow somebody will chime in shortly, with the answers you need. Good Luck, Daytona is getting closer...

First, is the belt "seated" correctly with the teeth engagedon both pulleys? Go to the DIY threads and search on belt alignment. There is a real good thread with pics there which makes it real easyto visualize. You can fabricate your own alignment tool from a copper rod. You need to make sure the belt is seated correctly then go through the alignment procedure as shown in the thread just to make sure. If you find the belt is not seated you should still align it anyway to prevent premature wear & failure.

The belt is seated correctly on both pulleys. This one has me stumped. I've been wrenchin' on bikes for a loooong time and never had this before. Looks like the rear wheel is offset too much toward the brake disc side of the bike. I'm going to pull the wheel, check bearings and spacers again and remount the darn thing. It's got to be in the spacing somewhere.......thanks for the suggestions so far.

Well, pulled everything off the rear, went ahead and checked/greased the bearings, made sure the spacers were installed in correct directions and buttoned everything up again. At first I thought I had the SAME spacing problem, BUT when I turn the rear tire in "going forward" direction, the belt lines up fine on the drive pulley. When I spin the rear tire in a "backing up" direction, the belt shifts on the drive pulley toward the transmission side. Anyway, since it lines up fine going forward, I'm going to assume this is some wierd phenomenon with my Dyna, and go ahead and ride it like it was stolen![8D]

First, I'm no wrench. But, IIRC, it's something inherint to the belt drive bikes, not just Dynas. Something about going forwards that the belt needs to be off a little angle. And going in reverse, it seems cockeyed. I'm sure someone more knowledgable than I will chip in with teh 'correct' answer and maybe even the explaination for this.
