The rear wheel of my 84 fxr is always coated in oil/grease. Is there some type of oiler inside the primary that can be shut off or is this just the result of not having a chainguard.......or what? Any help greatly appreciated.
If it happened suddenly and it smells funny, chances are you lost the mainshaft oil seal behind the transmission drive sprocket. If it is the axle, it will be spread out over the rear wheel sprocket on the inside surface because of too much grease in the bearing. I would doubt very much if the primary is leaking with the exception of the inner primary bearing that supports the transmission mainshaft to the clutch. If it is a loose fit in the primary case (which wears out the case) it could leak primary fluid to the chain. This would be my last, not my first suspect.
If it is the transmission seal be advised that you will need to replace the spacer that the seal lip rides on. They are notoriouly "soft" and not hardened sufficiently to resist the lip seal wear for very many miles. The oil and dirt from the chain make for a nice grinding compound which accumulates at the seal lip and wears a groove in the spacer. That is the cause of the leak. I remember Jims makes a replacement spacer for the FXR to correct this condition. It is a very much more hardened piece. I made my own and hardened them to 60 Rockwell. The stock ones are lucky if they reach 30.
