For awhile I was looking into this as well. My understanding was that the backrest and bags use the same docking kit and in order to use both at the same time use longer bolts so that there are two of those black barrels sticking off the fender. That's the main reason I didn't do it. I just though it would look a little funny.

I also have HD detachable bags with HD sideplates and Sissy Bar. The part number they told you is correct. I purchased P/N 53961-06,$24.95,(looking at receipt). Attached are a couple of pics. Pretty easy install, I did it in the dealers lot. Go figure you would have to buy another kit...

Crap, the pictures didn't load. There in my photo album Front and rear points.

Crap again, can't seem to do anything with the friggen pictures. If you want I'll email them to you.

Finally!!!

I used a longer mounting bolt, a 3/8" tubing sleeve and a couple of washers on my FXDXT so I could quick attach the backrest and the bags.....could take a better pic if you wish.

"thanks for the info.so if iam reading this right, i need to buy two of the same docking kits and put them together with one another? thanks jackyl"

If you already have the docking hardware installed for the saddle bags, all you need to purchaseone additional kit P/N 53961-06 ($24.95), it supplies the additional barrel, bolts and spacersto accomodate the sideplates (inner one in the pics).

If you are ordering the bags new, they will come with the docking hardware for the bags only, Iordered my bags inlate 06 they arrived in early 07. Catalog said you had to purchase the bag docking hardware separatly, so I did at the dealer. Bags arrived with hardware included.

Bottom line, new bagand side plate installation requires two kits, one that comes with the bags, and P/N 53961-06for the side plates.

Hope this all makes sense

Crap... so i started working on my own set (saddlebag #90460-06 using docking hardware #53961-06) as well. Eventually, i will add the detachable sideplates 52866-06 for the missy's sissy bar.

However, even with these things, components seem MISSING.

docking hardware #53961 only has one pair of the 3/8"-16 x 1 3/4 button heads which is said to be afixed to the front docking point. There are no extra of these bolts for the rear portion of the fender attachment, only instructions to "mount rear docking point according to the intructions with saddlebag kit" GRR.

Of course, my saddlebag does not include parts or instructions to install the rear docking point. It assumes that the docking hardware #53961-06 is already installed.

what gives?! I'm going to go pick up some extra bolts. And now, I have to get even more stuff for the sissy bar?! Help!

I dunno if this looks like what you wanted to do, but I made my own. I used two mounting kits, but reversed the outer set so they don't stick out as far. As it shows, I can ride with any combination of saddlebags and backrest, or nothing at all. Unless I point them out, most people never notice the wider docking ports. I had originally thought about just hanging a detach backrest sideplate upside down, but was uneasy about having the entire weight of the bags and contents depending on the shear strength of the lock-down clamp. (they weren't designed to bear weight, just to secure the plate on the port) Click the pics for larger version.
