Thanks BFB, that's what I was looking for. As a former LEO, if you get cited under Ch. 90 instead of the CMR, you'll most likely suceed in beating the citation.
As a current Mass. LEO (BTW i'm running sideshots before anyone says a word) If "I" were to deem a bike was too loud just as a judgement call (same for excessive windoew tint etc) I COULD (but dont) write a citation and it is up to the "violator", not me to prove that the pipes are NOT too loud, that is handled through an inspection by the RMV. If you chose to change the pipes out to OEM to "beat" the citation then thats great and its seen as a win but truth is its a pain in the a$$ to do it. My suggestion "dont be an a'hole" and you be all right, ive stopped plenty of huys over the years and told them "ive got one in the garage, I get it. But you need to be smart about it" My bike has apes and loud pipes etc. but i've never been hypocritical and written a ticket. I dont want to change my pipes so even with a badge im cool when im around other cops.....its my job,not a right to abuse the system. Like everything else in this world you can get a jerk of plumber etc. you can get a jerk of a cop. If I got a citation for loud pipes thats on ME, not the system. We want to play the game we need to accept the risks. In Mass. you need to worry about the inspection station guys alot more than the cops.
Exactly Mud. When I was a LEO, I worked with other guys who rode too and we all felt the same way you did. If i did stop a bike, most of the time was spent talking about the bike...lol It's called using your common sense. We all know the noise is controlled by a flick of the wrist..it's all about being smart about it.

Agree. First inspection of my dyna was in the winter - when it was stock.
I called up to ask if the local shop was open for inspection - the guy said yes - and added "don't come here if you don't have stock pipes or you have taken the reflectors off - I will fail you"
thanks for the warning. I did go there that day - but never again.
