Reflector Removal
Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to remove the reflectors from a painted surface? I took the front ones off with a heat gun, but they were just on the aluminum forks, not a painted surface. I'm worried that if I try the heat gun route, that the paint might get messed up. Any suggestions out there?
The best thing I found is Ronsonol lighter fluid. Otherwise known as Naphtha. This should not harm your paint, and will slowly soften the two sided adhesivethat holds on the reflectors. I used it while working at a dealer. You will need to use quite a bit of it. First put a good bead on the top of the tape and let it soak. Then start to pull the reflector. It will resist this so be patient and as soon as it starts to pull away add some more to get it inbetween the fender and the tape. Again be patient and slowly work the reflecter and it will come off nicely. Most of the time you can let the reflector dry a little and reapply it to something else. After let it dry or use a soft cloth to dab away the fluid and follow with a thourough lightly soapy wash.
I used fishing line on the fork reflectors, dental floss on the fender. Came off easy as hell, then used a good wax to remove any remaining residue (of which there was very little). If more residue than wax dictates, then goo-gone works great.

I always use the hair dryer to remove the reflectors from forks and painted rear fender. They come right off the rear fender after you heat 'em up for a minute or two.
i used a heat gun with no probs. no chemicals. heat reflector, pull off, heat adhesive, rub off with thumb, heat any leftover residue and use sticky side of masking tape to pull off.10 minutes tops. i used to replace Toyota emblems with gold ones and that was the SOP issued by the company for getting them off.
