I just came in from putting my pipes back on (just finished wrapping them). While putting them back on the bike I took a peek inside the exhaust port and saw that the valve was white as snow. Is this a normal condition or is it another reason whyI'm going to smash my FuelPak with a brick? I'm not much of a wrench but, I'm trying to learn and you guys are the best I know. Thanks
White usually means lean, very lean. I would pull your sparkplugs and look at them - a nice, rust color is perfect. Black/dark=too rich. White/light=too lean...
your fuelpak is not set right.or your bike has not the right map down load. if you change your stock ac to free flow or your pipes or slipons you need to remap your system. or your pipes will soon turn white. check your plugs, if they are white and crusty to lean, it will screw up your motor. if your plugs are alittle black on the base of the plugs thats rich, and thats safe for your bike. and if you change your pipes or just slipons make sure you change your exsaust intake gaskets, if you dont you will soon hear back fires and loud pops. any shiffting or movement of the pipes brakes the seal. change your plugs to the ngk iridiums. good luck ride hard and dont stop!!
Do not change your spark plugs as your ecm uses ion sensing. If you change your plugs you will lose your knock sensor capability. You probably need a better fuel management device.

Yeah, I'm not going to change plugs. I just installed the Tmax but haven't run it yet, in fact my bike hasn't run since Jan. I know the FPak had my bike running hot,(and it was programmed right, accordding to V&H tech support)thats why I got rid of the POS. I guess my questuion is, Should I be concernd about the current condition of the valves? Are they now more likely to fail?
Without removing and magnafluxing there is no sure way to tell. Exhaust valves are usually a stronger material than intake valves and take quite a bit of abuse. If your valves/plugs are a brownish white then your probably Ok but could bump the fuel up a little.
my bike is carbed, so im not too sure about tuning EFI on a Harley. I do all of my Tuning to my 2000 Montecarlo though, and its the same basic concept. Do any of you guys use data loggers to tune? If so, I could take a look at the logs for you.
Your valves are fine. My stock 07 softail had white plugs and valves when run at 14.7. Reading plugs with these things anymore is pretty useless, as they will be white even when things are normal. The Tmax will give them a nice toasty look after a few miles as it will be in around the 13.5 afr. A colour that I much prefer on an air cooled engine Ron
One of the "dirty little secrets" of the fuel mgrs. is "max-outs."They can only add so much addt'l fuel to the AFR. If your engine needs more and the fuel mgr is already at it's max capacity, then you'll still run lean. This is why so many pro dyno guys recommend the HD d'load PLUS the fuel mgrs - the ecm will already be addingfuel, so the fuel mgr has less to add and a lower chance of a max-out.
I've also heard of "zero-outs" which I'm told is the fuel mgrs. way of saying "WTF?" and not doing anything at all for a few cycles. Not saying this is the problem in your case, or even IF you have a problem. Need a lot more data.
Anyone have more info on how the ECM uses ion sensing? Any good threads on this?
