Default Handlebar swap question

I've got an 07 FXD and it just seems that I have to reach too far for the grips to be comfortable. With my butt planted in the back part of the seat my elbows don't have any bend in them. Talked to my local HD parts guy and he brought out some different bars to try out. Seems that the bars off an 07 WideGlide work well. About 2" more pullback, maybe slightly higher than mine. My question is: do I need to switch out all the cables and brake line to an 07 WideGlide? Parts guy says yes, and I trust him...but, it doesn't seem like that much of a difference to warrant changing all that out. Has anybody done a swap like this? Thanks...

I would imagine you could go to the stock Street Bob or Wide Glide mini-apes, without changing the cable, but I'm not sure. I don't know if they all use the same cables as stock, or if the Wide Glide and Street Bob have a little bit longer cables.

I have an 07 superglide and i didn't like the reach either well i also didn't like the seat so i put on a sundowner and just sitting on the bike it seems to have pushed me forward a little and put me right where i want to be won't know for sure till the snow melts off but it feels alot better in the garage.

I had the guy at the shop pull out one of the sundowners deep bucket and we put it on a bike in the show room before i bought it the sundowner sure seems to push you forward some now the sundowner tallboy they say will do the opposite and push you up and back a hair.

I will see how it goes and then possibly change bars if needed after this year but i think the seat is going to make the big difference for me iam 6ft 1 inch and about 250 to give you an idea.

That may be a good solution. I've been thinking about seats too. Sounds like we are built about the same... I'm 6'1" and 230.
The WideGlide and SuperGlide do have different part numbers for the cables and brake line. The parts guy printed out all the sheets with the numbers and prices so I would have them if I decided that's what I wanted to do.

If you are interested in the mini-apes, you will need to go with the set from a Street Bob. Th WG bars on the 06 and later FXDWGs are 1.25 inches at the risers and won't fit the riser/speedo set-up on a FXD. There are members of the forum who have installed the Street Bob mini-apes and used the FXD cables, re-routed the FXD clutch cable, and reformed the FXD brakeline and made them work. I believe ideally new cables and lines should be used.

Easiest way would be to try another seat. As mentioned, the Sundowner will push you forward a good inch or so. The Reach seat might be another avenue to try. That's a lot less work than the other option of changing the bars if all your looking for is to get a little closer to the grips.

Swing into your dealer and have him put a sundowner deep bucket seat on a superglide and set on it and see what you think.

Here is another thread with the part numbers you'll need. I replaced them all. Some have said you can straighten out the brake line but I didn't want to go that route. If you're just putting on the mini apes you have enough excess wire to pull out from under the tank so you'll not need to splice anything.

Thanks Carltex. I checked your link and those parts numbers for the Bob are the exact ones I got for the 07 Wide Glide. (Except for the brake line, and the Wide Glide bar number has a "T" after it.)
The prices look a lot better than what I was quoted though![:@]
