Ya gotta remember, a lot of people really like Harley, but just don't want to or can't do the miles. Ask questions! There's always an element of risk involved when purchasing something second hand. Have someone check it our for you, might help satisfy your doubts. If you don't ****** it up, someone else will!
Seems like a good price, like bikergirl stated some people get them and just don't seem to find the time. I would also recommend having a mechanic take a look. If all checks out jump on it.
John_O: I was in the same dilemma. I found a '93 Ultra Classic that had been in a crate until 2 years ago. It was then Dealer prepped for the original buyer (long story). The Dealer has totally serviced the bike twice in two years putting a grand total of 24 miles in road testing on it. They are now prepared to sell it off the floor as a used bike to a new buyer. I looked it over and was really tempted. But, I passed more because of the engineering improvements in engine and suspension that I would be giving up over a new Bagger. Sure be fun to go on the Laughlin River run riding a brand new "93 model................. BC
I completely agree with bikergirl. I took my little girl to a birthday party this past weekend and while there, the birthday girl's father mentioned he had a Harley. So, we go out to the garage, and there it is, an absolutely georgeous 2000 Softtail Standard. He had torn it completely down had the engine polished, chromed everything--it was really beautiful!! Complimented him on his bike and then started talking about riding-- first words out of his mouth, "Well, I don't ride very much." I just stared. His bike only has 2500 miles on it. I guess I just ASSUMED everyone that has a Harley loves to ride as much as I do.
For a 99, even with low miles the price sounds about right to me. It does look good but tell the guy you want to ride it, then just go ride and listen to it and check how it shifts, and when you first fire it up, it needs to be cold, look for any smoke from the exhaust or unusual sounds. See if she idles good with the enricher on, then see if the idle drops back down when you push the enricher off. If so, then you are probably ok. Many folks who sell their bikes have few miles and the dealer probably didn't give him but 8500 or so for it, telling the guy it was 7 years old, so 12.9 would be a good profit in his pocket. If you like it and it does all the required things, tell him you'll give him 12 cash for it, he might take it. My brother had an 02 deuce, black with the mauve pinstriping, winvest shield, vance&hinds 2 into one, not a mark on it , stage one and 3400 miles. Said I could have it for 14 but I couldn't handle it at the time, still can't. the very first guy that walked in and saw it gave him a check for it and said when the check clears he'd come and pick up the bike and did. Make a deal---jack
Welll.... I don't wanna be the one to rain on a parade, but I'll throw in my $0.02.
The mileage is not really unusual. Like others have said, not everyone rides as much as some of us. Also, you're in Md, which would have a shorter "riding season" than other places - for those who are effected by the elements.
My concern is the model year. '99 was the first year for the TC's. I see the chain drive cams as problematic, but I think they were even more so the first year or 2. I'd definately factor in the price of at least cam bearings if not gear drive cams.
Also, for around here (Texas) that would be at the upper end of the price range. Not a BAD price, but not a smoking deal that had to be snatched up. That's just short of what I paid for my '03 with 8000 miles on it.
Just my opinion ;-) Check it out, then offer them less!
Thanks for the replys. I'm listening. Ok, didn't think about a dealer just buying the bike outright. I thought why would someone trade it in for something else with so few miles unless something was wrong.
It will be about 3 more weeks before I have the money, so i'll wait till then and just go from there. if it's gone I'll go back to my plan on a 1200 custom. No biggie if it's gone. Will save about 2 grand for other "stuff" for the custom LOL
While the price with all of the accessories may not be too bad, you're paying for a 7 (model) year old bike with the 2007's due out in the next few months. A new '06 Low Rider has an MSRP of $15,600 in black, $15,900.00 for colors. I know it's more than you might be willing to spend, but my point is that there should be much newer bikes for not too much more than is being asked for the 99.
Meathooks is right, with this being the intro year for the TC, it could have very expensive problems that you will have to pay for. Most of the TC's early problems were worked out after 1999. I think you can do better with a new bike for not much more cash.
