Got a friend who has scotchbrited his pipes, a/c etc and says it looks killer. He, like I, love the look of a lot of Exile bike parts from russ mitchell. I have not seen yet but am dying to take a look. Has anyone done this? Do you need to clear coat or something else? If not rust? I may try it on an old part first. I think the look is great on a blk denim bob and I am one of those that is almost anti-chrome. Thanks for the replies.
I have heard this too but never seen it. A guy around the block from me said on one of his old nike he had taken a scotchbrite pad and scuffed the stock parts up.. He said it was killer looking. I hope someone posts some pics and explains how though...
I have done it on old honda CB parts but never on the HD... i usually would do it when i could not afford to paint or re chrome the part. I did it on wheels mostly... just looked though about 100 pics and nothing of any of the bikes i did... go figure! sorry man. I like the look just did not have the ***** or the desire to do it to my HD...

You do not need to clear coat, chrome does not rust, as long as you dont expose the metal below. Note scotchbrite will only put scratches in the chrome finish and desnt really remove all that much material. Try is on a old part and be aware of the "grain" you will be puting in it. You will want all of the little scratches going the same way. Anouther cool effect is usinga scotchbritepad in an orbital sander but, theis would be too cool on a bike in my opinion.
that would be sick! i am going to write that down bud.... now that my bike is done, her's will be by the end of the weekend i can finally finish my 350 bobber budget build... GREAT IDEA!
I herd some where that you should spray parts with WD-40 before scuffing with a scotchbright pad. I have no facts to back that up. It sounds like it would make sense, maybe it prevents you from burnig threw the chrome to fast?
I did this to the "Shull" cover for the tail light on my Street Bob and I have to say it looks great! It dulled the chrome but left the recessed black skull. It now matches the original brushed look of the strut covers.
using WD40 makes the process easier and makes it look more uniform.
i have used this method on lots of chrome stuff and also onchrome moly like frame tubing and headers for funny cars.
like was mentioned maintain a uniform direction
