Just to be ultra clear...I'm in no way implying you are a poser for asking peoples opinions on a certain chunk of hardware, just sayn' not to take the praise or critasizim for any more than it's worth. Peace.
It shouldn't damage your engine. The whole concept behind baffles or silencers is to quiet your engine down as well as scavenge fuel. I have seen it proven to me how much free flowing exhaust reduces performance. As I have said take you a quarter inch bolt and drill you a hole in the bottom of each pipe. Install the bolts at the bottom. It will not quiet your engine down but the turbulence that they create will put enough back pressure on your engine to give you better performance. Or install some power cones, they help immensely. But as far as for damaging your engine, I don't think that it will have that effect.
A 1/4" bolt, lollipop baffle or shorty baffle will improve your bottom end. IMO, the torque cones are in the wrong end of the pipe to do any good. Head porters don't port exhaust ports and guys don't use thinner exhaust gaskets like the SE ones for nothing. Flow from the head is good. Sticking something in there to taper the port down and limit the flow is not.
A hyper charger, while it looks cool, is just another high flow air cleaner so, yes, you need your ECM adjusted on some form or fashion (download, fuelpak, tuner device) to compensate. Before buying my fuelpak, I called V&H's and asked about suitable air cleaners and specifically asked about Kuryakyn hyper chargers and they said those were fine. Fuelpak requires a high flow air cleaner to operate properly. Any stage 1 a/c or hypercharger qualifies.
If you don't enrich the fuel mixture, it'll run even leaner than stock ... could cause it to run hot and I think it could cause it to backfire.
I'd recommend getting some kind of a efi enhancement. I'm pleased with the Dobeck Perfomance TFI moduleI use.
A lot of the decision with respect to air cleaners/intake is one of taste, as most aftermarket A/C units improve air flow to the engine, but I am kind of partial to the Goodson A/c (see photo).
Also, I'd recommend some kind of baffle in your exhaust ... Big City Thunder seem to have a good product and reputation.
I put the hypercharger on my new 1999 XLCH and did it for looks and performance. Since I was dumb enough to put drag pipes on I went to the dealer and upgraded the pipes and had them tune my ride. Dealers will say the hyper sucks because they dont work as good as the SE Stage 1 because they dont sell them. Reasearch some back bike rags for dyno results.
If you just want the look, I say get it.
You will need some type of fuel managment upgrade, if you install it with your pipes.
Personally, I bought the hyper-Charger on Hype, when I found out it was no real peformance gain, I never even took mine out of the box....
