a quick question ... my rear brake light does not come on when applying rear brake. Light comes on when front brake is pressed. Running light works also! Is this a simple bulb replacement or should I look for something wrong with the rear brake cable ?
If the brake switch goes bad the brake light will normally stay on. If it works fine using the front brake I would suspect a wiring problem with the rear brake switch. You may have a pinched wire or smoked fuse. I would chase the wires fromt he rear switch and look for issues there.
bulb is ok if it works when you hit the front brakes. the rear look down near you master cylinder there is a wire there check and make sure nothing is wrong with it and that it hasn't come off. if it's not that then next would be the pressure switch for the rear brake.
If either switch goes bad the brake light will stay on all the time. So considering the fact that the front works fine you can skip that. This moves us to the rear switch. Obviously the switch isn't bad or the brake light would always be on. This means that either the wiring has come off the switch or the wiring is damaged in some way.

or the switch for the rear brake is stuck in the "in" position failing to turn the brake light on when the rear brake is applied. Does this seam like the obvious problem or am I retarded?

I've never seen a pressure switch get stuck in that position, but hell, anything's possible. Perhaps I'm overthinking the situation. I would probably slap a new switch on if the wiring wasn't obviously disconnected or damaged near the switch.
