If the law in your state requires you to have an approved DOT helmet while operating your scoot on any public road there, then yes he has the right to ask you to remove your helmet so that you can produce evidence of that sticker (some are visible on the outside)
I can't hardly believe this LEO stopped you for that helmet b.s. if thats the case he's got to be a rookie looking to fill his daily log book or there's more to it

I did stop one person last year for no helmet less then a mile from his home, left the bike on the side of the road put him in the BACK seat and gave him a ride home to get his helmet ( the ride in the back seat of a patrol car was more effective then a ticket)

I love my job, my bike, and my Kevlar novelty helmet............not married the bike replaced her...hell the bike replaced everything

Have a nice day

I have to say that i think its really up to the person to decide if they want to put on a helmet be it dot or not but here in Texas where you can put one on or not its nice to be able to make that choice. I have beengiven a hardby LEO before and i think some of them are just a@# Ho!*# but if I was asked I would just give it to them to look. If you live in a state that requires a dot helmet just get one then you don't have the problem to begin with. I only put mine on when i know i am driving in heavy traffic but its me decision to do so but this whole topic could go on forever because we all have our ownideas about things so everyone just be safe the way you feel safe.

I myself just hung up the duty belt about 45 mins ago and here is my answer. I have 3 Biltwell's (non DOT) and an ACC DOT half helmet. I am assuming the risk for my head and dont put that on anyone else. Can I ask you to remove your helmet, yes. Do you have to take it off, probably not. HOWEVER, after 15 years ive decided to work smarter and not harder. So here's my scenario;

1) Legitimate traffic stop (moving violation....not pipes or apes that would be hypocritical)
2) "Is your helmet DOT approved if so would you care to show me"(thisof course depends on whether my ***** have been busted or not)......"no, ok i'll be right with you"
3) "here is your citation for (moving violation) and defective equipment (non DOT compliant helmet) If you wish to fight this the procedure is clearly outlined on the back of the citation....drive safely"

If someone pushes im going to push back, like mentioned before I could give a crap about whether or not someone else wants to take their life into their own hands. Never once hassled anyone about DOT helmets. The above scenario has NEVER occured but im not going to fight with someone over a freakin helmet. If I did the above it would then be on you (violator) to prove that it is complaint.....you'll go out of your way to show anyone who'll listen if it is compliant and pay the ticket if it aint. I listen to people all the time talk about how they "beat" the ticket or the like. But the reality is you didnt because you had to alter the way you do business (take day off of work or school, drive to the court house, find a parking spot etc) Talk about a complete waste of time...thats three hrs. of your life youll never get back, could have been riding. Every cop is different to a degree and have certain things that frost their ***. For me its cowards who beat up on women and kids but thats another discussion.

Truth of the matter is its about respect (that goes both ways) Ive cut guys loose with weed etc. if they were a gentleman about it. We are all human beings and we all make mistakes but the biggest issue in my mind is how we interact with each other. Courtesy and discretion are the biggest parts of my job and they go along way but I expect the same in return. Accountablilty and responsibility are another, if I wear a non DOT (cop or not) and I get pinched for it, I cant get pissed at someone else because they called me on it. Those laws (helmets, DOT etc) are for the 16 yr old kid who thinks he knows everything and that he can handle doing 100 mph or whatever. Whether we like it or not common sense is not wide spread and our society feels it necessary to try and mandate it. Unfortunately, many of us suffer in return but to what extent depends on the individual.
Mud you nailed it! We should have more officers like you!

I drove truck for 15 years and when it comes to dealing with a LEO you better be yes sir and no sir. Anything else will just elevate the situation! If you try and play ignorant or get stiff you are only gonna hurt yourself! Example!

A few years back I was headed north up the Grape Vine out of LA and I was empty. The first two lanes trucks are allowed. You get in that third lane a cop sees you...........you are in for a great big fine! Kern County don't **** around! Anyways I was empty and in a hurry and I jumped into that third lane to get around loaded slower trucks. When I pulled into the third lane a Werner truck jumped in right behind me. In less then 1/4 mile a CHP car is on us gumballs all lit up. We both pull over and this werner driver jumps out and just give this Chippy the full press screamin' and acting the fool. The cop doesn't say a word but he is getting pissed! I am watching this in my rearview mirror. He hands this guy a ticket and the driver flips him off as the cop is walking away. The cop then comes up to my passenger side and yanks the door open. He yells at me, "YOU KN

this is crazy: whatever cop pulls you over is is determining the law.
absolute BS.
just another example of cops exerting their will on the public

And for a measly 12 bux an hour.......don't that just beat all?

In 15 yrs with my agency, I have written ONE m/c rider a ticket.....a ricer, going about 20 over on his back wheel.

I have better things to do with my time, than hand out citations for every law on the books. And quite frankly, the chicken-chit violation I write today, just MIGHT be the rider that decides NOT to help ME out in the future, should I be stranded on the road somewhere.

I don't get why some on this board don't like LEO's. Yes there are some officers I am sure that have issues, but for the most part I really repsect folks who choose this line of work. Let me tell ya they aint doing if for the great pay and flexible work schedules. Most officers do their job because they want to give back or they have a true calling for serving the Public.

I lost a good friend almost 3 years ago in San Leandro CA. He was shot to death by some illegal alien, drug dealing scumbag. He left behind a wife and two children and he was one of the most generous human beings I have ever come to know. He was running the ID on this scumbag when the guy, high on Meth, pulled a pistol and shot him in the chest. While my buddy lay on the ground from being shot point blank the Perp walked up and shot him in the head. I find it hard to believe that many on this board would pull that type of risk. Worse yet you spit on the ones that do, and they do it everyday!

Feckin' shameful!
