I'm not a LEO, But I could not even imagine dealing with some of the bullSh!t out their, day in and day out.
Shift after shift, all the Lowlifes wasting our tax dollars and wasting the Leo's time.
Sorry, but you folks in Law enforcement don't make enough $$$ to put up with The constant crap out their.
This debate could go on forever. My.02

Mellencamp sings it pretty well, I fight Authority and authority always wins.......
Not to be a sheep, but chances are better if cooperation is in the picture.

the way I see it, cops are way underappreciated. no one wants to see one unless theyve been a victim of a crime. i wonder why we (military) get so much appreciation from the american public when we go to war to fight an enemy that does not wear a uniform, and definately does not play by the rules we play by, but if you think about it, cops do the same **** everyday in this country. way too underappreciated.

ok i know you asked this to the cops out there i asked my lawyer this very question he told donot take the helmet off what ever you do because if it is a novelty the officer has the right to sieze it but in ontario he can not force you to take it off
Hmmmm. I am not so sure I would take your lawyers advice.
I agree with Mud. Be respectful and take your lumps.
When you are at the side of the road, the fella with the badge is Judge, Jury and Executioner.

I was minding my own business last summer, riding within the speed limit, riding safely on the highway and saw lights flashing behind me.
I thought to myself, WTF have I done??
I pulled over, shut my bike down (quiet down the V&H straightshots), took off my glasses, helmet and gloves.
I pulled out my drivers license, ownership and insurance and waited.

The cop (O.P.P.), and he was big bruiser, came over to me and said, relax, I just want to check your helmet - no need for the insurance, ownership etc.
While he proceded to ask me about the poor condition of my D.O.T sticker ( I ride in the rain you know), his radio goes off and says:
No priors, no convictions, dispatch confirms my address and validity of my insurance.
I said - wow, you can find all that out from my D.O.T. sticker (politely and jokingly with a smile). He laughs, and tells me to have a good day.
Point is - the stop was COMPLETELY ILLEGAL - I know this, but co-operate because I have done nothing wrong (well, mabybe the wake the dead pipes is an issue).
Give him lip and he would likely have whacked me for the pipes, hit me with the deteriorated D.O.T. sticker.

I would show him the helmet, if asked if it was DOT I would acknowledge it wasn't. Officer discretion is a great thing, If you are polite and cooperate you might be release with a warning if you are an a$$ I would bet you get a bunch of paperwork. This hinges on the registration, insurance and license all being good. In Philadelphia you can get away with alot if you have your paperwork in order. Side note within the city limits if you get pulled over without registration or insusance you can lose your ride. We no longer require helmets in PA so no worries about this being the reason for the stop.

This is a good thread. Since we're on the topic of helmets, I don't agree with helmet laws whatsoever. In CT there is no helmet law. Well I can't say NO law. There are some statutes but the driver doesn't need one past a certain age/experience, etc. Passanger doesn't need one either.

I drive into the commie state of Massachusetts a lot where helmet laws are real. Irecently looked up the law and it says that the driver and passanger need to wear protective head gear but the law is not specific (not that I could find)on WHERE said driver and passanger have to wear the helmet. I thought about rolling through with the helmet strapped to my knee. Same thing with a seat belt. If I wrapped it around my wrist, I'm still wearing it......

Usually I do wear my DOT approved helmet but I just don't like to be told what to do because of the best interests of the lucrative insurance lobbyists. If I wanted a babysitter, I'd ask for one. That's how I feel. Let me choose if I want to wear a skid lid or not. For the time being, in CT we still enjoy a tiny sliver of this thing called FREEDOM that all of our beloved servicemen and women continue to fight to protect.

Overall I appreciate what the cops do. I wouldn't want their jobs. I'm always respectful but I can't stand those badge heavy arrogantcops either. Also,it's those cops in small towns with nothing better to do than bust the chops of the hard working people. I swear these small town police departments create their own problems to keep themselves busy.

Since they passed the Patriot Act, they don't need warrants.

What's kind of annoying here is I live 10 miles from South Dakota and 2 miles from Nebraska, in Iowa. Nebraska has a helmet law so if I go over th bridge they are just waiting for me. I go back to Iowa and the helmet comes off, now where do I put it? Banging around on my $13,000 Dyna? So I wear a novelty helmet and just throw it in my saddlebag. Neverbeen bothered so far.

Come do a ride a long with me out in LA and you can see what gangs, drugs, and real violence is like. All you guys who stereotype.....maybe I should think that because you are white and ride a Harley, that must mean you’re white trash with a criminal record and tweaking? Does that sound fare, you guys are crying over a helmet law. Come on please...... if you hate it so much and don’t want to take the risk at getting a ticket then don’t break the law. Again I will say, I wear a non DOT helmet most of the time. That is something personally I would never stop someone for. I really do have better things to do, then cite someone. I am all about respect, and you gotta give it to get it. I always treat people the way I would want my family treated. If you want to bring your voice up a notch, you can be dam sure I will as well. You want to argue with me and tell me my job, you can press hard and sign all 3 croppies. Then you can think about it on the drive back home.
