WOW....this was a very interesting thread with some great comments and answers. I was a Military Police Officer for several years and can tell you I have great admiration and respect for the real LEO's that do it day in and day out....ahhhh the fun times ofthe domestic violence calls, drug OD's, stupid *** drunks at the club that think they can whip the **** out of any body and then thetrue Azzhole you pulled over for a moving violation.....I can tell you these guys don't get paid enough or shown the proper respect for what they do....Just my opinionsooooo...... just a quick thanks to all you guys and gals for what you do [sm=icon_cheers.gif] I wore those shoes fora few years and can tell ya it takes a special person.
Hint, hint......I could always tell with 10 seconds of talking with the person if I was going to write a citation or not, attitude is everthing

Very interesting!
Let those who ride Decide! I honestly do not understand why it is even a law. This is supposed to be America where we are free to choose. Well so much for that. To me it is the same as the seat belt laws. You can't say that it is always better to wear a seat belt, when there have been many instances where a person has been ejected from a car and that is the only reason that they survived. Anyway let us decide what takes us out of this world because it is our life....or is it?
I'm always respectful of cops and what they do. But as a cop, don't talk down to me. I'm a human being, not your subordinate! I, the tax payerpay your paycheck...You're a public servant...You work for me! Keep that in mind for all you badge heavy cops out there......that's all.
Talk to me like a human being on the same level. When they don't I ask them questions like "off the record officer, are you happy doing what you're doing?" Or I'll flat out ask them nicely to treat me like a decent person. At that point I don't care if the ticket is coming.....it's all about respect and some of the pushy ones need a reminder.
I'm not going to tell anyone else what they should do. I'll just add how I decided I would handle this scenario, especially now that a revised but, still arguably vague, helmet law was put into place here this year. If I am wearing a novelty helmet, I'm willing to take responsbility for the consequences whether they be physical damage as a result of a crash or a ticket as a result of a traffic stop by an over-zealous barney fife type LEO. In other words, with respect to the purpose of this thread, if the LEO asks me to remove it, I'll remove it, regardless of what my rights may technically be. I put myself in the situation by putting the helmet on with full understanding there could be consequences so I'll have to live with whatever comes of it.
I have friends or acquaintances at every level of law enforcement in my area. Not a single one of them says they would stop me or anyone else for just wearing what appears to be a novelty helmet. However, if I'm doing something dangerous and they stop me, and then I try to be the "I know my rights a$$hole" during the stop, then they are looking for anything and everything they can cite me for. However, I know there are and always will be the still wet behind the ears LEO's just looking for an excuse to turn on the lights and siren so I'm still taking that risk each time I put that novelty helmet on my head and go out on the road.
Now that I've found a decent looking and comfortable DOT helmet, it's really not an issue for me anymore. However, we need to stop these questions of "if you are going to wear a helmet, why not wear one that protects you?". We all know why and you know why when you ask that. It's because many of them make many of us look ridiculous. And that's not what this thread was discussing anyway.
Dang, this thread heated up fast! I appreciate the comments and advice from the LEOs who responded. All of y'all sound like the LEOs that I know. From the SAPD guys to the Bexar County Constables to the Texas State Troopers (DPS here) to the former Sonoma County, CA sheriff's deputy and various military police professionals they're all squared away, level-headed, common sense folks. Are there a few folks who are on the shady side? You betcha, but for the most part and by a huge margin, they are exception.
No, I'm not an LEO, but have the highest respect for those who are. They are the good guys.

Hate me or not, I can live with myself...... but the statement you just made makes you sound completely immature. I am not gonna sit here and debate with you about it either. Save it for the keyboard warriors.

I want a raise and a newboss that isn't such a *****.
I just dont get it . if it is the state law that a dot helmet is required why buy a novelty helmet ?
if you have to have something on your head then why not something that offers some protection?
Here is what I don't understand............Live in a "free" state, but wear a novelty helmet?? If I am not going to wear a helmet, I am not going to wear any kind of helmet. I hate helmets, but I have been investigating MC accidents for 25 years, so I wear a helmet, (well 99.9% of the time)and a seat belt in a car........BUT I do believe adults should have a choice as to wearing either. Therefore I practice "selective enforcement" and ignore the seatbelt laws....we don't have a helmet law for 21YOA+ so for now I don't have to deal with that anymore. But when I did, a novelty was good enough for me, if you don't have anything on your head in a helmet state, you put the LEO on the spot and he has to do something, which pisses his lazy azz off so he/me will/would write your dumb butt up for going "naked" in a helmet state! What would you expect??
