I liked my 07 Street Bob mini apes but they really didn't match the bike due to the size of the largefork tubes and a 1" bar diameter so I decided to upgrade to 1 1/4 bars 13.5" apes and go with 3.5"wild ones Chubby risers which match the bar thickness. I also cut 1/8" off of the riser gromet sleeves so that I could tighten the gromets more in the tripple tree and reduce some of the play in the riser bushings. It made a hell of an improvement over stability and reduced bar vibrationconsiderably. The bars are now just right for my 5'9" short ***. No more bending forward to reach for bars sice I have gotten rid of the other bikes I have had with drag bars. They hurt my back. I can ride now forever it seems only to stop for fuel and get right back on and go some more.
I just bought an 07 dwg with the stock mini-apes. I'm 6'1" and they feel a little low for my taste. I too want to swap in a taller set. Is there an easy method for figuring out how much longer each cable needs to be? Is there any mod needed to the harness since it feeds up into the stock bars? Meaning do I have to lengthen the wires to the signals, switches, etc.
sclonghairbadboy, you will need to extend your wiring if you're putting on taller bars. Check with your local stealer and have them check the fatbook. There is a wiring extension set that has you pull your wires from your stock plug, extend them, then slide back into the stock plug with OEM type connectors. Very clean setup and worked great on my bike. As far as cables, you'll have to measure. My aftermarket braided brake line is actually shorter than my stock line due to not having the bends on the solid lines. My suggestion; put the bars on, then route a thick rope (1/2 inch) as you would your line. That will give you a very close estimate as to the length of line you will need.
I did it to straighten up my back. Also is reminisant of my beloved 1973 Schwinn Stingray. Had asky blue one, apes and all, exactly like the one here, except mine was sky blue:
+1
yup, just tryin to relive my youth.
true apes start at 14" -go big or stay in the "mini" league. [8D]
looks, comfort and looks. one of the best mods so far. i went with the black mini apes from HD. drilled and internally wired myself, straightened the break line, rerouted throttle cables and only had to replace clutch cable.
I was at the painter today discussing a new paint scheme for my bike. His bike has what looks to be 16's on them. (He was trying to talk me into putting apes on my Fat Bob) Anyway, he had me sit on his bike, and besides the difference in weight (my bike actually feels much heavier) the apes felt quite comfortable (surprisingly). I always imagined they wouldn't feel very natural. I still love my drag bars but I definitely have a different perspective when it comes to apes now.
Oh and my paint job is going to be freaking awesome! [sm=smiley20.gif]

Holy smoke, I had a bike very similar to that (seat wasn't as high though). I remember distinctly riding around the neighborhood pretending to be a biker! Go figure huh?
why apes ? because of the feeling you fly in the air. I changed my stock mini 10' apes on my 06 WG and put 16'. Awesome !!!. If you wannaput 10' thenI suggest try 16'. I am sure 10' will not be high enough. Like someone said here before, when you go ape never go down
