Fat Bob back rest
What I'm wanting is three backrests. I figure the stripper seat isn't going to be as comfortable for long trips as the stock seat so I may want to switch back for long trips, particularly if my wife is with me. So one is the backrest for the stock seat. Mostly I plan to use the stripper seat and most likely use it travelling solo. I want a short backrest normally as a place to hang my helmet
When travelling I'm thinking a tall backrest for a bag. When it comes to the short and tall backrest the parts guys at the dealership where I bought it have no idea what width bar. I figure, it nothing else, I would just go with the backrest for the stock seat and use quick disconnect brackets to remove the brackets when I have the stripper seat on it. I ordered the backrest for the stock seat figuring with the thing setting there in front of us we ought to be able to figure out what width fits the bike. It should also be easy to say exactly what is differant about the backrest.
Does anyone know what width bar it takes? I would assume it's the same rearend as a wide glide and whatever fits a wide glide will fit it. Has anyone changed seats on a fat bob and put a sissy bar on?
The Stripper seat will be OK for solo and looks tough, but not for anything I would call "a trip", unless you mean from one side of town to the other.
The brackets are the same between the Wide Glide and Fat Bob, I think the backrest will end up in the same spot fore/aft. The Fat Bob upright will allow the seat length to vary (which is why it's so high and looks so ugly I am getting a Haulen ***). The rear is a lot wider on the Fat Bob, which is why the upright is different. (that helmet locking license frame I believe i saw at twistedthrottle.com, looked just fine.
Not sure what to tell yo on the 3 backrests. For your purposes, yeah the stock one for the stock seat (incidentally she won't be happy with the stock seat, get a Sundowner Deep Bucket for her, or a Corbin Dual Tour), then the Stripper, ehhhh, I've seen these license frames that have a helmet lock kinda hidden, I'd get that for the helmet, or else get a shorty backrest made up for the removeable sideplates. For Touring, again I'd just get a metal shop to make you a custom backrest for strapping stuff to.
She's suppose to take the safety course, get her license and ride the sportster. I'm mostly just humoring her. She isn't going to come with me, but I have to go through the motions of preparing for her to do so. I plan on making 1-2 trips a month, she might join me on one trip in 1-2 years.
