Just saw an article in the April issue of american cycle regarding installing a jagg oil cooler. I understand what it does but?...... I can see having one maybe in the southwest or hotter environs but are people routinely putting these on their bikes. Whats the skinny and issues ?
Saw that article and been going to ask that one myself boom. Be curious to see what the response it. Can't imagine it would be needed in western Oregon.
I think the oil coolersare probablybeneficialif they had a fan behind them, so when you need them the most when yournot moving you'll have some air flow going through them. Triggered to turn on by the brake light switch or a low speed sensor would be ideal.
Here's the skinny, dino oil (non-syn) upon hitting a certain temp will starting loosing it's effectiveness in doing it's job, it will start thermally breaking down and it won't recover. An oil cooler will effectively at speed reduce your oil temps by almost 20-30 degrees or more. Granted when you are not moving there's no airflow but there is still some cooling by conduction. The newest oil filter adapters that workwith the oil coolers open automatically at 180 degrees oil temp., I just call it oil insurance and every little bit helps to remove the engine heat.
Even synthetic oil has a thermal limit at which its friction reducing properties will be damaged. Synthetic oil will however definitely lower the engine heat; if you are not running high quality synthetic oil then you might give that a try.
Here's an example, got off the interstate with my 05 EFI Lowrider after a 12 mile run with temps in the high 80's to low 90's. Checked my oil about 1 minute after shutdown, I have never seen Mobil 1 syn smoke like it did coming out of theengine case, that afternoon I ordered the oil cooler and associated parts, then I changed out the oil and filter just to be on the safe side. I haven't had that problem since. If you install one adjust the new oil quantity accordingly.
