am wondering what a good shock is for an fxr ....... anybody got the progressive suspension shocks on their scoots???? how do you like them or can anyone recomend another type/brand..... what is the advantage or disadvantage of struts.....
Have an 87 FXRS,& have the progressive's.The ones I have lowered my bike too much(I'm 5'6").There a good shock,but I put the wrong ones on my bike.Trying to remember the exact type I have.Will get back to ya
If you're looking for a good shock, Progressive makes good ones. I have them on my scoot which is the same as yours. The stock length shock is 13 inches long from the center of the mounting holes. If you use 11 inch units the bike will look good and ride lousy. You will have about 2-3/4 of wheel travel at that point. It will ride hard no matter what you do with the preload on the springs.
I also have a pair of Fournales (White Bros.) air over oil shocks which allow the air pressure to be changed with a high pressure pump. They are a little bouncy on the rebound, a tad softer on the compression with about the same amount of wheel travel. They ride OK with about 8 bar of pressure which is equivilant of around 112 psi. pressure. These same shocks need 12 bar to ride 2 up. They are not worth the money.
If you look at a stock FXR, the bottom of the fender looks as if it is just a tad below the top of the tire. There is about 4 inches of allowable wheel travel space before the fender would hit the tire. That's a good thing but makes the rear of the bike look like it's hiked up in the back. Lowering the bike makes it look better but it changes the handling because you will be sitting lower down behind the handlebars. It makes the steering slower because your arms have to move further. It sounds crazy but that's the way it works. I have tried many things with mine but have found that the best riding is with stock shocks (because of length) and wheel travel. The later FXRs (2000 up) had the shock pivot moved further forward on the frame which allowed a lowered bike with the same amount of wheel travel which is the way we want to go. Unfortunatly, we would have to drill, weld and repaint the frame to achieve this.
progressive makes a stock 13' shock,i got the 11' lowering shocks on mine but with a bobtail fender,no trouble with ride or hitting fender or bottoming out, i ride 2 up sometimes and im not a little guy,but the ole lady is a feather weight on the back though.i like the lowering shocks puts the tire in the fender looks good,but check your clearince before ya get them.

what year is your fxr????? if its like mine then the shcoks are almost vertical.... not like later fxr's and dynas,,,, they have more of an angle to them... have to say i like that look much better.....anyway do the 11 inch shocks give you a good ride?? not too hard??? would like the look of lower shocks but dont want to comprimise the ride .........lots of bucks for progressive shocks......
my fxrs is a 82,first year for these wonderful mechines,the progressive shocks will ride a little stiffer than stock, but i like them the lowering looks good they got a 11 1/2 eye to eye that would look good on yours. and a few styles to chose from all chrome,chrome and black,and billet. they got a web site check them out,and iv'e seen then on ebay for a good price,along with all kind of parts that will fit your bike,check it out go to ebay motors,under parts for american bikes,pun in fxr in as a serch and WOW!!! also check www.jirehcycles.com they got the 412 series shocks for 179.00
